AUSTIN, Texas – Gunnar Orcutt of Peru State College leads the 2017 Academic All-America® College Division football team as awarded by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Orcutt was named the CoSIDA Academic All-America® of the Year for College Division football. Orcutt became a two-time Academic All-America® selection with a 4.00 cumulative GPA studying biochemical science.
The CoSIDA Academic All-America® College Division football team spotlights student-athletes from NAIA, Canadian and two-year institutions.
Orcutt’s CoSIDA Academic All-America® of the Year award adds to a variety of honors he has accumulated during his Peru State career. He made the American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team® and the semifinalist list for the AFCA’s William V. Campbell Trophy, awarded by the National Football Foundation that is given to the American college football player with the best combination of academics, community service, and on-field performance. Orcutt has been recognized for his academic achievement with two Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete awards, the Board of Trustee Scholarship and six Dean’s List citations.
Orcutt has a track record of being active on campus and in the community. He has been a member of student senate, is the student-athlete advisory committee vice president and was one of the football team captains. Voted homecoming king, Orcutt has accrued more than 120 hours of community service with Kids Against Hunger and campus recycling. From Elkhorn, Nebraska, he plans to attend medical school with an eye towards practicing medicine in his home state.
On the field, Orcutt posted 51 tackles, including 20 solo stops and three tackles for loss as a senior and 161 tackles, one sack, 10 tackles for loss, three pass breakups and one interception in his Bobcat career as a defensive back-linebacker.
Also taking CoSIDA Academic All-America® first-team honors for the second time in their careers are offensive lineman
Zac Lawson from Lindsey Wilson College and defensive back
Josh Woodard of University of St. Francis (Illinois).
The 27-man Academic All-America® College Division Football First Team averaged a 3.87 GPA.
