AUSTIN, Texas
– Stanford University and five-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer Katie Ledecky has been named as the 2017-18 Google Cloud Division I Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Ledecky, who maintains a 3.99 GPA majoring in psychology, is the first sophomore to receive the honor. Ledecky is the second Stanford student-athlete to receive the award, joining former football standout Tommy Vardell (1991-92 University/College Combined Team Member of the Year).

“I would very much like to thank Google Cloud and CoSIDA for this honor, and for their sponsorship of this Academic All-American program that serves to recognize so many dedicated student-athletes around the country,” said Ledecky, who is from Bethesda, Maryland.

“Also, I wish to express my tremendous gratitude to my classmates, teammates and coaches, the Stanford Athletics department, and the faculty and administration at Stanford who support my endeavors every day and make both 'school and pool' wonderful places to be in Palo Alto,” she continued.

Ledecky is one of the most decorated swimmers in history, having earned five Olympic gold medals and 14 World Championship gold medals, as well as 14 USA Swimming national championships. She is the current American/World record holder in the 500-yard, 1,000-yard, 400-meter, 800-meter and 1,500-meter freestyle events. Ledecky led the Cardinal to back-to-back NCAA and Pac-12 Championships in 2017 and 2018.

As a collegian, Ledecky broke American records 11 times, NCAA records 15 times and six NCAA meet records. She is a nine-time NCAA All-American and won eight NCAA titles overall, including 2018 crowns in the 500 free, 800 free relay and 1,650 free (setting an NCAA meet record in the latter event). She is a seven-time Pac-12 champion including three titles in 2018.

“We are incredibly proud of Katie and everything she has accomplished. This is a tremendous honor and certainly well-deserved. Katie sets the standard in her pursuit of both academic and athletic excellence. Her work ethic is just as strong in the classroom as it is in the pool, and I’m happy all her efforts were recognized with this award,” said Stanford head women’s swimming coach Greg Meehan.

Cornerstone University’s Kyle Steigenga was named the Google Cloud College Division Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year on July 16, Nebraska Wesleyan’s Cooper Cook earned the Division III Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year on July 17, and Western State Colorado’s Alicja Konieczek claimed the Division II Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year on July 18.
