AUSTIN, Texas – Missouri Baptist senior opposite hitter Giovanna Tapigliani headlines the Academic All-America® NAIA volleyball team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The NAIA Academic All-America® program is financially supported by the NAIA national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2020-21 NAIA Academic All-America® teams.

Cardoza is the recipient of the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for NCAA Division II volleyball. A second team Academic All-America® choice in 2019, the Chino Hills, California, native is one of seven student-athletes to land on this year’s first team.

Tapigliani was named the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for NAIA volleyball. The São Paulo, Brazil native is the first Spartan volleyball player to ever be named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® NAIA volleyball team and is one of eight student-athletes to land on this year’s first team, which includes a pair of Spartans (Isidora Stojovic is the other).

Based on the absence of most fall sports competition, the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Committee revised some rules and procedures for nominating student-athletes this season. Due to the low percentage of games completed this season, the nominees were selected based on career statistics and achievements.

The 2020-21 American Midwest Conference Player of the Year led the Spartans to the NAIA National Championship with a national tournament best 89 total kills with a .309 attack percentage as she averaged 3.6 kills and 0.9 blocks per set. She led the team with 3.36 kills per set, hit .324 and registered 65 blocks and 128 digs. She was named to the NAIA All-Tournament Team, earned All-America first team honors and is a two-time All-AMC first team selection.

In addition to her success on the court, Tapigliani has excelled in the classroom as she finished the year with a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade-point average as a business administration major. She is one of three first-team honorees with a 4.0 GPA and six of the eight had a 3.92 GPA or better.

The first team is composed of seven seniors and one sophomore and one repeat performer in Erin Clark of Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) University who was a first team selection in 2019.
