Ron Perry, born in West Roxbury, Mass, excelled as a two-sport athlete for the College of Holy Cross Crusaders while also maintaining academic excellence in the classroom. He was an athlete on both the basketball and baseball programs for the Crusaders and ended his schooling graduating Magna Cum Laude (3.7 GPA) in his class.
In athletic competition Perry was able to see his name enter the record books in both sports upon his departure. On the court Perry left the program at the time as the Crusaders’ all-time leading scorer, scoring 2,524 total points. He was also able to grab the single-season mark of most hits in a season on the baseball field with 66 base hits.
Perry also garnered several awards for his accomplishments with the Crusaders. He earned Eastern Conference Athletic Conference (ECAC) Rookie of the Year honors in 1977 and was selected as the Player of the Year in his senior season, 1980. He would later be honored by being named to the ECAC All-Decade Team of the 1970’s. On the diamond, Perry was selected to the All-New England team and third team All-American team.
Perry was able to choose his path in sports after graduating as he was selected in the draft in both sports in which he played. The Boston Celtics selected him in the third round of the 1980 NBA draft. In baseball, Perry was drafted in the 1979 draft by the Boston Red Sox and again in the 1980 draft by the Chicago White Sox.
