Doug Collins was inducted into the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Hall of Fame in 1995.
Doug Collins, a native of Christopher, Ill., was a star member of his high school basketball team in Benton, Ill., before going on to play for Illinois State University in 1969.
In 1972 while a senior at Illinois State, he was selected as a member of the United States Olympic Team, which was involved in the controversial last-second defeat at the hands of the Soviet Union, 51-50 in the Gold Medal game.
Following that game Collins was selected by the Denver Nuggets of the American Basketball Association (ABA), but failed to play a game in the league due to being drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the first pick of the draft.
Collins played in the NBA for eight seasons, averaging 17.9 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game, all with the 76ers. He was a member of the NBA All-Star Team on four occasions and also appeared in one NBA Finals series in the 1976-77 season, losing four games to two against the Portland Trailblazers.
After finishing his playing days, Collins went on to coach for three NBA franchises; the Chicago Bulls (1986-1989), Detroit Pistons (1995-1998) and Washington Wizards (2001-2003). During his eight seasons as a head coach, Collins amassed an overall record of 332-287 (53.6%).
In 2003, Collins joined the NBA on TNT broadcast team as a color commentator.
