Eufaula, Oklahoma native Lee Roy Selmon comes from a line of Oklahoma football stars. He joined his brothers Lucious and Dewey when he first suited up for the Sooners in 1972. These three defensive linemen are the most famous set of brothers in University of Oklahoma history and played on the same line during the 1973 season. Lee Roy was a star on the historic 1974 and 1975 National Championship teams.

Selmon, the youngest of nine children, earned many awards and recognition throughout his college career. He was a consensus All-American in 1974 and 1975, as well as an Academic All-American in 1975. As a senior he received the Vince Lombardi Award, given to the best lineman or linebacker in college football, and the Outland Trophy, awarded to the best interior lineman. He was also named a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete and Graduate Fellowship Winner from the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame.

Selmon went to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the first pick in the 1976 NFL Draft. Selmon and his brother Dewey were teammates once again on the Buccaneers. Selmon had a standout rookie season, earning the team’s Rookie of the Year and MVP awards. He went to six straight Pro Bowls and was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1979.  A back injury sustained in 1984 forced his retirement. The Buccaneers retired his number, 63 in 1986 and he is also a member of the Florida Sports Hall of Fame.

After hanging up his jersey Selmon remained in Florida and worked as a bank executive. From 1993 until 2001 Selmon served as the assistant athletic director at the University of South Florida and was then promoted to athletic director in 2001. He retired in 2004 to become president of the USF Foundation Partnership for Athletics.

Selmon was inducted into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in 1992 and named the Walter Camp “Alumnus of the Year” in 1996. Selmon was one of only six defensive tackles named to the Sports Illustrated NCAA Football All-Century Team in 1999.
