Carlos Alvarez was inducted into the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Hall of Fame in 1989.
Carlos Alvarez was born in Cuba and raised in Miami after moving with his family as a child. Alvarez went on to attend the University of Florida where he excelled on the football field for the Gators.
Alvarez set numerous records in his days as a Gator, some of which still stand today. He still holds the Gator record for receptions in a game (15) and in a season (88). He graduated holding the record of career receptions (176), career receiving yards (2,563), second for yards in a season (1,329) and second in receiving yards in a game (237). In the 1969 season he averaged 133 yards per game, a mark which still stands as the best ever by a Gator and has only been broken once in the entire SEC since he graduated.
Alvarez was named consensus All-America in 1969 and All-SEC as well. He was also named as a three-time Academic All-American (1969, 1970 and 1971).
The Dallas Cowboys drafted Alvarez in the 1972 NFL Draft but did not play or sign a contract because of knee injuries. He went on to Duke Law School where he graduated summa cum laude in 1975.
