• 1984 Academic All-America® Second Team
John Stockton was inducted into the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Hall of Fame in 2002.
John Stockton was born and raised in the city of Spokane, Wash., where he attended St. Aloysius and then went to Gonzaga Prep High School. After his time there he went on to college at Gonzaga University where he played basketball all four years.
Stockton is represented throughout the record books of Gonzaga, and in 2002 stood in third all-time in assists (554), 17th in total points scored (1,340) and 12th for points per game average in a single season (20.9 in his senior season).
After completion of his four years at Gonzaga, Stockton was drafted in the 1984 NBA draft by the Utah Jazz (1st Round, 16th overall pick). He played his entire 19-year career with the Jazz and was selected to 10 NBA All-Star teams over that time. He was also named to the All-NBA First Team twice over his career and the All-NBA Second Team six times.
Stockton retired from the NBA in 2003 with his name etched in the record books. He averaged a double-double over his NBA career with 13.1 points and 10.5 assists per game. He set the overall records for most assists (15,806) as well as most steals (3,265). His 19 seasons with the Utah Jazz is the most seasons any NBA player has spent within one franchise for a career.
Over the course of his career Stockton played in all but 22 games (18 of which came in one season). He helped lead the Jazz to back-to-back NBA championship appearances in 1996-97 and 1997-98. He was also a member of both the 1992 and 1996 US Olympic basketball teams, which later became known as Dream Team I and II. During the 1996 season Stockton was selected as one of the NBA’s Top 50 Greatest Players and is named by ESPN as the fourth best NBA point guard of all-time.
