Senior David McNeill of Northern Arizona (pictured, left) and graduate student Mark Husted of Colorado School of Mines (right) top the 2009-10 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Track and Field and Cross Country Teams, as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).      

McNeill and Husted have been selected as the winners of the Academic All-America® of the Year award in the University and College Divisions, respectively.

An exercise science major with a 3.75 GPA, McNeill won the NCAA Division I indoor and outdoor championships in the 5,000-meter run. Two weeks ago, he ran a 13:44.81 in the 5,000-run to claim the outdoor title at Oregon. A repeat selection on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Track and Field and Cross Country University Division first team, he also led the Lumberjacks to a fourth place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championship Meet by finishing as national runner-up.

A nine-time All-American, he was honored as the 2010 Mountain Region Male Track Athlete of the Year for cross country, indoor and outdoor track. At the 2010 NCAA Indoor Meet, he led Northern Arizona to an eighth place finish by winning the national title in the 5,000-meter run and taking second place in the 3,000-meter run. The school record holder in the 5,000-meter run, the Melbourne, Australia native led Northern Arizona to a second place finish at the Big Sky Conference outdoor championship. At the Big Sky Meet, he won conference titles in the 1500-meter run and the 5000-run for the third year in a row.

McNeill, who set the school record in the 5,000-run at the Stanford Invitational, was also named as the NCAA Division I Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the Cross Country Coaches Association.
Husted, who was a first team selection on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Track and Field and Cross Country College Division Team last year, also earned third team notice in 2008. A graduate student with a 3.94 GPA., he earned his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering and posted a 3.85 GPA.

The NCAA Division II national champion in the 800-meter run in 2010, Husted is a six-time All-American and a seven-time national qualifier. Husted was also a member of the NCAA champion Distance Medley Relay team at the 2009 Indoor National Championship Meet.

A 13-time All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference selection in his career, he was honored as the 2010 RMAC Academic Athlete of the Year. A native of Westminster, Col., he helped the Orediggers finish 12th at the NCAA Division II national championship outdoor track meet.

® Honors


McNeill is one of only three Scholar-Athletes who are repeat selections on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Track and Field and Cross Country University Division first team. Senior Phillip Adam of Rice was named to the first team for the second straight year while senior Ryan Vail of Oklahoma State was honored for the third year in a row.

The 16 members of the 2009-10 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Track and Field and Cross Country University Division first teams have an average GPA. of 3.79. Four of the members of the first team have perfect 4.0 GPA's.

Seven members of last year’s second team earned first team honors this year. Seniors John Berens of Rice, Jack Bolas of Wisconsin, Brian Joyce of Evansville, and Ryan Whiting of Arizona State are joined on the first team by graduate student Jason Lewis of Arizona State, junior Gonzalo Barroilhet of Florida State and Darius Law of Charlotte.

Senior Chris Labosky of Yale, junior Lee Ellis Moore of Mississippi and senior Mark Van Orden of the U.S. Naval Academy were third team choices last year who moved up to the first team.

Graduate student Chris Dickman of Wichita State, senior Cyrus Hostetler of Oregon, and junior Nicholas Gordon of Nebraska complete the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Track and Field and Cross Country University Division first team.

Arizona State and Rice were the only schools with more than one representative on the first team.

An economics major with a minor in business and a 3.95 GPA, Adam was the two-time Conference USA outdoor champion in the decathlon. Honored as the C-USA Track Scholar-Athlete of the Year twice, he finished ninth in the decathlon at the NCAA Championship Meet two weeks ago. A native of Santa Maria, Cal., he won the C-USA indoor decathlon in 2008 and finished as runner-up in 2009.

Adam’s teammate at Rice, Berens has a perfect 4.00 GPA with a triple major of biochemistry, cell biology and psychology. A native of Omaha, Neb., he is a recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Honored as Rice University’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year twice, Berens excelled at the triple jump for the Owls. He finished sixth in the triple jump at the C-USA Indoor and Outdoor Championship Meets.

An international studies major with a 3.62 GPA, Vail was a three-time All-American in cross country at Oklahoma State. The Big 12 Conference individual cross country champion, he led the Cowboys to the 2009 NCAA Cross Country championship as well as the Big 12 title. A two-time All-American in the 5,000-meter outdoor run, he won Big 12 individual titles in the outdoor 10,000-meter run and the indoor 3,000-meter run. A native of Gresham, Ore., Vail was honored as Oklahoma State’s Male Student-Athlete of the Year.

Bolas, who was a Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor recipient, won the Big Ten championship in the 1500-meter outdoor run. He was also part of the Big Ten champion distance medley relay team at the indoor meet. A zoology major with a 3.67 GPA, he was a standout performer for Wisconsin’s cross country team. A native of Chapel Hill, N.C., he won three consecutive Big Ten titles in cross country and was named as an All-American three times.

An exercise science major with a 4.00 GPA, Joyce was the top runner for Evansville’s cross country team as a senior. He had four top-30 finishes and finished 11th at the 151-runner UE Invitational. A native of Evansville, Ind., Joyce was the winner of Evansville’s Ralph H. Coleman Award as the school’s top senior male scholar-athlete.
 
An NCAA Division I qualifier in the 200-run and the 400-run, Law earned All-American honors in the indoor 400-run as a senior. A business management major with a 4.00 GPA, he helped Charlotte win its third straight Atlantic-10 Outdoor Track championship by winning the 200-run and the 400-run while contributing to the A-10 champion 4x100 relay team. A 12-time Atlantic-10 champion in his career, the Raleigh, N.C. native was the A-10 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award winner for indoor and outdoor track twice.

A graduate student who earned his B.S. degree in History from Arizona State with a 3.70 GPA, Lewis was an eight-time All-American for the Sun Devils. At the NCAA Championship Meet at Oregon, he finished seventh in the nation in the shot put and the discus. At the Pacific-10 Conference championship meet, he was second in the hammer and third in the shot put. A native of Phoenix, Ariz., Lewis is the winner of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
 
Lewis’ teammate at Arizona State, Whiting was the NCAA Division I champion in the shot put and the discus as a senior. It marked the second year in a row that he won both titles. An 11-time All-American, Whiting is a civil engineering major with a 3.42 GPA. The holder of the collegiate indoor record in the shot put, he is a three-time NCAA indoor champion in the shot put. A native of Harrisburg, Pa., Whiting won two Pac-10 titles in the shot put. The recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, he ranks second in the world in the shot put.

A member of Florida State’s Atlantic Coast Conference championship team, Barroilhet struggled through an injury-riddled junior year for the Seminoles. A management major with a 3.84 GPA, Barroilhet was the NCAA Division I champion in the heptathlon in 2008. A two-time All-American in the heptathlon and the decathlon, he owns school records in both events. The 2008 ACC champ in the heptathlon, he was named as the ACC Indoor Freshman of the Year. A native of Santiago, Chile, he competed in the Olympics in 2008.

A humanities major with a 3.98 GPA, Labosky earned All-East honors in the 800-run the last two years. The school record holder in the 800-run, he was also an NCAA qualifier in the event. The 2010 Ivy League champion in the 1,000-run indoors, the Tallmadge, Ohio native was also the co-captain of Yale’s cross country team as a senior. He also earned second team All-Ivy notice in the 4x800-relay indoors.

One of the top hurdlers in NCAA Division I, Moore earned All-American honors in the 400-hurdles last year for Mississippi. A biological sciences major with a 4.00 GPA, Moore holds the school record in the 400-hurdles. At the 2010 Southeastern Conference Championship Meet, he suffered a hamstring injury and missed the rest of the outdoor season. A native of Cordova, Tenn., Moore won four individual titles in the 400-hurdles in the Rebels’ outdoor season.

Selected as the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men’s track, Van Orden is an Honors English major and a 3.63 GPA. During his career, he won three Patriot League championships in the hammer throw. He also won two Patriot League titles in the weight throw. Named as the Patriot League Championship Field Athlete of the Meet in 2009, the Morris Plains, N.J. native served as the Mids’ team captain as a senior. The recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, he graduated 67th in a class of 1,051 from the Naval Academy.

The school record holder in the heptathlon, Dickman graduated from Wichita State with a degree in mechanical engineering and a 3.95 GPA. An All-American at the NCAA Championship Meet, he was honored as the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete for track. An All-MVC selection, the Grinnell, Kan. native helped the Shockers win the 2010 MVC championship. He contributed to the Shockers’ MVC championship in the 4x100-relay.

A political science major with a 3.46 GPA., Gordon won the Big 12 Conference championships in the long jump at the indoor and outdoor meets in 2009. The Kingston, Jamaica native also finished eighth in the long jump at the 2010 NCAA Division I Outdoor Meet. A three-time All-American, Gordon was the 2009 NCAA Indoor Champion in the long jump. The team captain of Nebraska’s Outdoor Track and Field team, Gordon is an eight-time Big 12 medalist.

A two-time Pacific-10 Conference champion in the javelin, Hostetler helped Oregon finish third at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track Meet. An art major with a 3.62 GPA., Hostetler set a Pac-10 record in the javelin. An All-American performer in the javelin as a junior, he finished tenth in the javelin at the NCAA Championship Meet in June. A native of Newberg, Ore., he finished fifth at the NCAA West Regional Meet.

® Honors


The 15 members of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Track and Field and Cross Country College Division first team honorees have an average GPA of 3.81. Three members of the first team have perfect 4.0 GPA’s.

Husted is one of three members of the 2009-10 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Track and Field and Cross Country College Division first team who is a repeat selection. Graduate students Aaron Braun of Adams State and Todd Wildman of Trinity (Tex.) were also named to the first team last year.

A second team pick in 2009, senior Max Petersen of Augustana (Ill.) was named to the first team.
Four members of the 2008-2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Track and Field and Cross Country College Division third team graduated to the first team this year. Seniors Jarrett Arredondo of Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Paul Wagner of East Stroudsburg joined juniors Simon Holzapfel of Tusculum and Bobby Torphy of Muhlenberg on the first team.
Graduate student Ricky Flynn of Lynchburg, seniors Brian Copley (Nebraska Wesleyan), Pat Jager of St. Thomas (Minn.), and Reuben Mwei (Adams State) were also named to the first team.

Juniors Loren Ahonen (Western State), John Donkersloot (Hope) and Orolando Duffus (St. Augustine’s) round out the 2009-10 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Track and Field and Cross Country College Division first team.

Adams State, which won NCAA Division II championships in cross country and indoor track, was the only school with more than one student-athlete named to the first team.

Honored as the 2008-09 ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-America® of the Year for the Men’s Track and Field and Cross Country Teams, Braun graduated from Adams State with a degree in mathematics and a 3.77 GPA. A graduate student who is pursuing his Master’s degree in human performance and physical education, he is a 16-time All-American who won six NCAA titles. The national champion in the one-mile run, the Fort Collins, Col. native helped Adams State to a fourth place finish at the NCAA Division II championship meet. A member of the cross country team, Braun finished fifth at the NCAA championship meet in 2009, helping the Grizzlies win the national title. Honored as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Athlete of the Year, he was named as the RMAC Academic Athlete of the Year five times.

A graduate student pursuing his master’s degree in accounting, Wildman graduated from Trinity (Tex.) with a degree in business and a 3.70 GPA. A two-time NCAA Division III champion in the indoor pentathlon, he earned six All-American honors in his career. The Dallas, Tex. native was awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and he was named as the Division III Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Year in 2009.

Petersen led Augustana to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) track and field championship for the second time in three years by running on the champion 400-relay and placing second in the 100-run. He also finished third in the 200-run. A biochemistry, pre-medicine and religion major with a 3.98 GPA., Peterson was one of the Vikings’ track and field captains as a senior. A native of Mundelein, Ill., he was the winner of the Erickson Award as the school’s top senior student-athlete.

The New England Men’s and Women’s Athletic Conference champion in the hammer throw, Arredondo is a chemical engineering major with a 3.72 GPA. at WPI. A five-time NCAA Division III national qualifier in the hammer throw, he also finished second in New England Division III in the hammer throw. A member of Alpha Chi Rho fraternity, the Somerville, Mass. native is a three-time NEWMAC All-Academic selection whose IQP Project worked on the restoration of Thoreau Society Records.

A sport science major with a perfect 4.00 GPA, Holzapfel was the top runner for the Tusculum cross country team. Chosen as the South Atlantic Conference Runner of the Year, he won the individual title at the SAC Championship Meet. A two-time All-SAC selection, he has won ten individual titles in his career. A native of Nuremburg, Germany, he was honored as the SAC Runner of the Week three times.

The owner of the Muhlenberg school record in the 800-run, Torphy is a three-time NCAA Division III qualifier. A biochemistry major with a 4.00 GPA., he earned All-American honors as part of the Distance Medley Relay team that finished fourth at the NCAA Division III indoor meet. A native of Schnecksville, Pa., he has won four gold medals and four silver medals at Centennial Conference Championship Meets.

An eight-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference champion at East Stroudsburg, Wagner was named as ESU’s Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year. At the PSAC Outdoor Championship, he won the hammer throw and the shot put and placed fourth in the discus. While leading the Warriors to a second place finish, he was the PSAC Athlete of the Meet. A sport management major with a 3.80 GPA, he earned All-American notice in the hammer throw. A native of Titusville, N.J., he holds school and PSAC records in the hammer throw.

A three-time All-American at Western State, Ahonen is a political science and environmental studies major with a 3.88 GPA. A five-time All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference honoree, he ran for two NCAA Division II runner-up cross country teams. Ahonen was also named second team All-RMAC in cross country three times. A six-time All-American in his career, he was named as the RMAC Scholar-Athlete. A native of Temperance, Mich., he is a two-time RMAC All-Academic first team honoree.

Copley, who has a double major in History and political science while carrying a perfect 4.00 GPA, was a three-time All-Great Plains Athletic Conference cross country runner. A two-time All-Region pick in cross country, he earned 12 All-GPAC awards in track and field. A four-time competitor at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship Meet, the Syracuse, Neb. native ran second in the 5,000-run at the GPAC Indoor Championship Meet.

A five-time All-American, Jager is a business financial management major with a 3.61 GPA. As a junior, he was the anchor for two national champion relay teams, leading the St. Thomas (Minn.) 4x100 and the 4x400 relay teams to titles. A native of Maplewood, Minn., Jager led the Tommies to seven of a possible eight conference championships in his career.

A two-time All-American in the high jump, Donkersloot is a Chemistry major with a 3.90 GPA.  He finished third at the NCAA Division III Championship Meet in the high jump the last two years. A native of Zeeland, Mich., he won the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship in the high jump in 2010. Named as a Beekman Scholar in support of his in-depth chemistry research, he is an accomplished pianist with several music awards.

The NCAA Division III individual cross country champion, Flynn is a graduate student who is pursuing his M.B.A. and has a 3.54GPA. Flynn, who graduated from Lynchburg College with a B.A. degree in business management and a 3.46 GPA, won three consecutive Old Dominion Athletic Conference individual cross country titles. A seven-time All-American who was named as the ODAC Track and Field Athlete of the Year, Flynn is a native of Lynchburg, Va. who won the NCAA individual title by 23 seconds.

A psychology major with a 3.40 GPA, Mwei joins Braun as Adams State student-athletes on the 2009-10 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Track and Field and Cross Country College Division first team. A native of Kapsabet, Kenya, he was the NCAA Division II individual cross country champion as he paced the Grizzlies to the national championship. An 11-time All-American, he also helped the Grizzlies win their first NCAA Division II Indoor Track championship. At the NCAA Outdoor Meet, he won the 3,000-Steeplechase for the second year in a row. Named as the USTFCCCA Athlete of the Year, he won Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships in cross country, the steeplechase, the Outdoor 5K and the Indoor 5K.

A business administration major with a 3.95 GPA, Duffus helped St. Augustine’s win the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track championship. He earned All-American honors by finishing fourth in the long jump and eighth in the triple jump. A native of St. Catherine, Jamaica, Duffus was also an All-American at the NCAA Indoor Meet, placing fourth in the long jump and third in the triple jump. Duffus was also honored as the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Field MVP award winner at the CIAA Outdoor Championship after winning the triple jump and taking second place in the long jump. Named as the CIAA Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, he also led the Falcons to their fourth straight CIAA championship.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
