TOWSON, Md. – Senior catcher Amy Madden of Southern Nazarene University headlines the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division II softball team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The Capital One Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2012-13 D-II Academic All-America teams program.
Madden, a native of Bethany, Okla., has been named as the Capital One Academic All--America of the Year for NCAA Division II. A biology/chemistry major with a 4.00 G.P.A., she leads the first team after earning Academic All-America® honors on the NAIA level as a sophomore and junior.
Although the Crimson Storm finished the season with a 19-33 record, Madden was a standout in the classroom and on the playing field. She finished the season with a .371 batting average, marking the fourth straight year that she batted higher than .370. She slugged 14 home runs and drove in 48 runs, adding five doubles and a triple. She had a .742 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage.
Madden was named as an NFCA All-American as a junior and sophomore. She also earned first team All-Great American Conference honors as a senior after earning first team All-Sooner Athletic Conference notice in 2011 and 2012. As a junior, she batted .394. She tied her own school record with 15 home runs and setting a school record with 78 runs batted in. As a sophomore, she hit .413 with 15 home runs and 53 RBI’s. She finished her career as Southern Nazarene’s career leader with 51 home runs and 213 runs batted in.
Madden is one of five members of the Capital One Academic All-America® first team who earned Academic All-America® honors in the past. The eleven members of the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II softball first team combined for a 3.82 G.P.A.
Pitcher Jennifer DeMotte of top-ranked the University of Indianapolis was named to the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II first team for the second straight year. An entrepreneurship major with a 3.83 G.P.A., the Indianapolis native led the Greyhounds to a school record 54 victories and a final 54-8 record. The Greyhounds lost in the third and deciding game of the Midwest Super Regional to Grand Valley State.
A former first team NFCA and Daktronics All-American, she was recently named the Daktronics Midwest Region Pitcher of the Year for the second straight season. DeMotte finished the season with a 26-3 record and ranked fourth in Division II in E.R.A. (1.06) and eighth in shutouts (10). In 185.2 innings, she allowed 119 hits and 31 walks while striking out 184. In addition, she hit .327 with 14 doubles, four home runs and 44 RBIs as the Greyhounds’ centerfielder. Last year, DeMotte led Division II in victories with a 35-7 record. She finished her career with an 87-23 record.
Senior Katie Warrington of Wilmington (Del.) is the other pitcher on the Capital One Academic All-America® first team. This marks the third straight year that the Townsend, Del. native has earned Capital One Academic All-America® honors. She was named to the third team as a sophomore and second team as junior.
A sports management major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Warrington led the Wildcats to a 34-20 record. . She was named as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year for the second time. A three-time first team All-CACC selection, she finished the year with a 17-5 record and a conference-best 0.99 E.R.A., striking out a league-high 230 batters in 134.1 innings.
Senior infielder Kacie Edwards of Central Oklahoma joins DeMotte as the only repeat first team selections on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II softball team. As a senior, she led the Bronchos to a school record 47 victories, the Central Super Regional championship and a berth in the NCAA Division II National Championship. A biology major with a 3.62 G.P.A., she leads UCO with a .410 batting average, 14 doubles, 18 home runs and 60 runs batted in.
A member of the All-Lone Star Conference team the last two years, Edwards earned All-MIAA first team honors in 2013. Honored as the Daktronics Division II Player of the Year in 2012, she led UCO to a 46-8 record and a berth in the College World Series. She batted .453 with a school record 79 runs batted in, a mark that led the nation. She also hit 19 home runs. Edwards owns nearly every school record, including at bats (662), hits (261), runs scored (138), doubles (54), home runs (52) and runs batted in (214).
Junior Bailey Vrazel of Texas Woman’s University was a second team Capital One Academic All-America® last year and joins Edwards as a first team infielder. She is one of two players from Texas Women’s on the first team, joining
TWU's designated player Katie Hines on the first team. Two of four juniors selected to the first team, they led TWU to a 51-12 record, the South Central Super Regional title and a berth in the NCAA Division II National Championships.
A kinesiology major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A.,
Vrazel has been named as a first team All-Lone Star Conference first team shortstop three years in a row. A native of Danbury, Texas, she is also a three-time NFCA All-South Central Region selection. She is batting .389 with 64 runs and 23 RBI’s. Vrazel has stolen 52 bases in 59 attempts after stealing 75 bases, a Lone Star Conference record, last year. She received the NFCA’s Golden Shoe Award as the top base stealer in the country.
A nutrition major with a 3.40 G.P.A.,
Hines leads TWU with a .399 batting average. She also has 18 doubles, 25 home runs and 85 RBI’s with a .869 slugging percentage. A the native of Beaumont, Texas, Hines was named as the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year and an All-LSC first team pick for the second year in a row, She was also an All-Region pick for the second time. She owns TWU single-season records for home runs and RBI’s.
Senior outfielder Julie Plante of Dominican (N.Y.) earned Capital One Academic All-America® third team notice as an infielder last year. A social science major with a 3.85 G.P.A., she was named as a first team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference selection for the third consecutive season. She led the Chargers to a 32-22 record and a berth in the NCAA East 1 Regional Tournament. Plante batted .393 with 16 doubles, two triples, seven home runs and 49 RBI’s and finished her career as the school’s career record holder for base hits.
Seniors Sarah Broeseker of Barry University and
Amy Dreessen of Southwest Minnesota State University, complete the first team infield. A biology (pre-med) major with a 3.67 G.P.A.,
Broeseker led the Buccaneers to a 34-20 record. Honored as the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year after hitting .415 with 14 doubles, four triples and three home runs, she had 37 runs batted in. Only the third Barry player to be named as SSC Player of the Year. Broeseker earned second team All-SSC accolades as a sophomore and third team notice as a junior.
A biology/chemistry major with a 3.83 G.P.A.,
Dreessen completed one of the best seasons in school history, helping Southwest Minnesota State to a 19-21 record. A first-team All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference first baseman, she led SMSU in nine statistical categories, including batting average (.436), runs (28), hits (51), doubles (12), and RBI’s (28). She ended her career ranked in the top five in SMSU history in doubles (33) and homers (18).
Juniors Jen Dixon of Minot State University and
University of Central Missouri’s Medora West complete the Capital One Academic All-America® first team, joining Plante in the outfield.
A physical education major with a 3.83 G.P.A.,
Dixon was the top hitter in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. She was recently named as the Daktronics Central Region Player of the Year. Dixon batted.447 with 17 doubles, six triples and 12 home runs while driving in 50 runs. It marked the second straight year she batted over .400 after hitting .410 in 2012. Dixon led the Beavers to a 41-11 record.
A safety management major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A.,
West helped Central Missouri finish the season with a 24-22 record. She was the team’s second-leading hitter with a .350 batting mark. She also had nine doubles, a triple and a homer, and 19 RBI’s. She stole 17 bases in 19 tries.
