AUSTIN, Texas – Senior outside hitter Abby Bertics of MIT headlines the 2018 Google Cloud All-America® Division III volleyball teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Bertics , an electrical engineering and computer science major with a minor in linguistics, has been selected as the recipient of the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year award for Division III volleyball. The La Jolla, California native holds a 4.0 cumulative GPA at MIT. A first team selection this year to the Division III Academic All-America Team, Bertics is now a two-time honoree. She was a member of the first team in 2017.
Bertics is a two-time American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III All-America selection, earning third team recognition in 2017 and again this year. She was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Athlete of the Year in volleyball in both 2017 and 2018. Bertics led Division III in kills per set this season with an average of 4.97 kills per set, a mark that was fifth across all NCAA Divisions. She was second in Division III with an average of 5.69 points per set. She led the NEWMAC in kills (437) and hitting percentage (.304) this season.
Eleven of the 21 members of the 2018 Google Cloud All-America® Division III Academic All-America® Division III volleyball teams have a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA. The seven members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.94 and the 21 student-athletes that make up all three teams have an average cumulative GPA of 3.93.
Eight of this year’s 21 student-athletes on the three teams are repeat selections from 2017. Bertics is one of four members of this year’s first team that are repeat selections from 2017. Bertics and Cornell College’s Jillian Schulte are on the first team this year, following first team honors in 2017. Azita Bakhtyari of WPI and Taylor Bauman of McDaniel pick up first team recognition in 2018, after earning second team accolades last year. Nora Holtan of Gustavus Adolphus and Sarah Paolini from Mary Hardin-Baylor are second team honorees in 2018 and 2017. Rose-Hulman’s Bailey MacInnis is a third team selection this year, following first team honors in 2017. Kate Walker of Johnson & Wales (R.I.) is on the third team in 2018 after earning second team recognition in 2017.
The Division III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2018-19 Division III Academic All-America® teams program.
