AUSTIN, Texas – Senior ice hockey goaltender Braeden Ostepchuk of Norwich and senior swimmer Julia Wilson of Kenyon headline the 2017-18 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division III At-Large Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
 
A mechanical engineering major from Lethbridge, Alberta, with a 4.0 grade-point average, Ostepchuk was named the Men’s At-Large Academic All-American of the Year. The Women’s At-Large Academic All-American of the Year, Wilson is a psychology major with a 3.99 G.P.A. from Bethesda, Maryland.
 
A back-to-back Academic All-America® first-team selection and a third-team honoree in 2016, Ostepchuk was named the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) Goalie of the Year and earned All-NEHC first-team honors in 2018. He posted a 12-5-2 record with a 2.04 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage with three shutouts.  
 
Ostepchuk earned the NCAA Elite 90 Award in 2017 as he backstopped the Cadets to the program's fourth NCAA Division III national championship. He led the nation with a perfect 16-0-0 record between the pipes. Ostepchuk ended his career as the Cadets’ all-time leader in goaltender shutouts (12) and second in wins (51).
 
A breaststroke specialist, Wilson was a four-time NCAA Championship qualifier and won her first national title this past season as a part of the Ladies' 400-meter medley relay team. She earned All-America honors in all five events she swam in at this year's championship meet, which brought her career total to 16 for her career.
 
A 2018 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient and a two-time Academic All-America® first-team honoree, Wilson holds both the Kenyon and North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) records for the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events. She was a 2016 Olympic Trials qualifier.
 
Among the 45 student-athletes of each gender selected to the Division III Academic All-America® At-Large teams, 12 men and 16 women carry 4.0 or better grade-point averages. The 17 members of the men’s at-large first team carry an average G.P.A. of 3.96, while the 15 members of the women’s at-large team carry an average G.P.A. of 3.97.
 
Twelve men and 10 women are repeat Academic All-America® selections. In addition to Ostepchuk, five men and two women earned their third straight Academic All-America® selections.
 
Four of the six men’s, three-time honorees were on the 2018 Academic All-America® first team. Coe tennis student-athlete Brady Anderson joined Ostepchuk on the Academic All-America® first team for the second straight year after earning third-team honors in 2016.
 
Two male swimmers earned Academic All-America® first-team honors for the first time, Tommy Thetford of Washington and Lee and Jason Wesseling of Denison. Wesseling was a second-team honoree in 2016 and 2017, while Thetford was a third-team honoree both years.
  
An Academic All-America® second-team honoree in 2018 and 2016, Lycoming wrestler Brandon Conrad earned third-team distinction in 2017. Wrestler Lance Evans of Wartburg received third-team honors for the third consecutive year.
 
Two women earned Academic All-America® first-team honors for the second straight year, after earning third-team honors their sophomore seasons – gymnast Amy Enright of Wisconsin-La Crosse and swimmer Shanny Lin of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
 
Other men’s student-athletes to repeat as CoSIDA Academic All-America® honorees: first-teamers Nate Flynn (Augsburg, ice hockey) and Corbin Gett (Benedictine, lacrosse) were second-teamers last year; first-teamers Jack Bauer (Worcester Polytechnic Institute, swimming) and Matthew Knigge (Vassar, volleyball) were third-teamers last year; second-teamer Luke Farley (Washington and Lee, golf) repeated last year’s second-team distinction; and third-teamer Evan Buitenhuis (Hamilton, ice hockey) repeated last year’s third-team distinction. In addition, Alex Bourzutschky (Caltech, swimming) was second-team on the Academic All-America® cross country/track & field team.
 
Other women’s student-athletes to repeat as CoSIDA Academic All-America® honorees: Wilson and fellow first-teamers Christina Herbert (Bridgewater, golf) and Kaitlin Wingert (Messiah, swimming) repeated their first-team honors; first-teamer Katie Aney (Gustavus Adolphus, tennis) was a second-team selection last year; first-teamer Kim Hochstedler (Carnegie Mellon, swimming) was a third-team honoree last year; second-teamers Helen Sakharova (MIT, fencing) and Nicole Zanolli (Washington in St. Louis, swimming) were second-teamers last year; and second-teamer Sarah Bradley (Calvin, swimming) was a third-team honoree in 2017.  
 
The Division III Google Cloud Academic All-America® program is financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2017-18 Division III Academic All-America® teams.
