AUSTIN, Texas – Senior Sarah DeVries of Calvin University headlines the 2019 Academic All-America® Division III volleyball teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The Division III Academic All-America® program is financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2019-20 Division III Academic All-America® teams.

DeVries, a nursing major, has been selected as the recipient of the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year award for Division III volleyball. The Grand Rapids, Michigan native holds a 3.82 cumulative GPA at Calvin. A first team selection this year to the Division III Academic All-America Team, DeVries is now a two-time Academic All-America® honoree. She was also a member of the first team in 2018.

DeVries was named the 2019 Team Snap/AVCA Division III National Player of the Year last month, receiving the award for the second-consecutive season. She is the fifth individual to be named National Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons. A three-time AVCA All-American, she was named the 2019 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Most Valuable Player in November.

DeVries averaged 4.39 kills per set this season, with a .413 attack percentage. She also contributed 4.91 assists per set, 2.09 digs per set and 1.17 blocks per set. She ranked in the top-20 in Division III in five different statistical categories this season, including third in points per set (5.43 PPS), sixth in the hitting percentage and ninth in kills per set.

Twelve of the 21 members of the 2019 Academic All-America® Division III volleyball teams have a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA. The seven members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.97 and the 21 student-athletes that make up all three teams have an average cumulative GPA of 3.96.

Seven of this year’s 21 student-athletes on the three teams are repeat selections from 2018. DeVries is one of four members of this year’s first team that are repeat selections from 2018, however, she is the lone selection this year to also earn first team recognition in 2018. Chelsea Huppert of Ohio Northern and Karley King of Case Western Reserve pick up first team recognition in 2019, after earning second team accolades last year. Hunter Weiss from College of St. Benedict is a first team honoree this year, following third team recognition in 2018.

Kate Walker of Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) is the lone member on this year’s Academic All-America® Division III volleyball teams to be a three-time selection. She is on the second team this year, also earning second team honors in 2017. She was a third team selection as a junior in 2018. Walker’s teammate, Maria Coniglio of Johnson & Wales, joins her on the second team this season after also earning a spot on the second team in 2018. Kate Isaksen of Clarkson University is a third team selection in 2019, following second team accolades in 2018.
