AUSTIN, Texas – Olivia Brees from Baker University headlines the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-America® NAIA Softball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The Google Cloud Academic All-America® NAIA program is financially supported by the NAIA national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2018-19 NAIA Google Cloud Academic All-America® teams.
Brees was selected as the 2019 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for NAIA softball. Brees, a senior from Meriden, Kansas, boasts of a 3.88 cumulative grade-point average majoring in elementary education. This is the second year in a row she was named the Google Cloud Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year. Brees was selected for the identical honor in College Division Softball following the 2018 season.
The pitcher finished in the top three in seven statistical categories for the Wildcats in 2019. Brees, who was named a first team NAIA All-American in 2018, finished first in the NAIA in strikeouts (449), second in wins (35), opponent batting average (.103), and hits allowed per game (2.39). She also was third in earned-run average (0.73), innings pitched (239.2), and saves (6). Brees, who recorded 1,302 strikeouts and 100 victories in her career, earned Pitcher of the Year and All-Heart of America Athletic Conference First Team honors this season.
The 35 wins surpasses the school record, which Brees set in 2018 with 29. The senior hurler helped Baker to a 47-9 overall record and a 30-4 Heart of America Athletic Conference record to win the regular-season championship. Baker, which set a program best with 47 wins in 2019, also won the conference tournament and advanced to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round.
Joining Brees on the Google Cloud Academic All-America® College Division Softball Team as repeat selections are Taylor Hansis of Georgia Gwinnett College, Brittney Banks of College of Saint Mary, Morgan Krieger of St. Ambrose University, Jordan Van Roy of Doane University, and Michella Davis of Ave Maria University. Like Brees, Banks, Krieger, and Van Roy are two-time first-team selections, while Hansis and Davis made the second team in 2018.
The Google Cloud Academic All-America® College Division Softball Team produced an average GPA of 3.88 with the first team combining for an average GPA of 3.91. The team includes three student-athletes with 4.0 GPA or higher.
