Cassidy Boensch headlines the Academic All-America® Division II Women’s Basketball teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2019-20 Division II Academic All-America® teams program.
Boensch was selected as the recipient of the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for NCAA Division II women’s basketball, while Wejnert was tabbed the recipient of the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for NCAA Division II men’s basketball.
A biochemistry major with a 3.90 GPA, Boensch is a two-time Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year award winner (2018-19 and 2019-20), grabbing this year’s honor as she is averaging 19.9 points per game and 9.3 rebounds per contest. The native of Au Gres, Michigan, is making her second-straight appearance on the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II Women’s Basketball first team.
Boensch became Grand Valley State’s all-time leading shot blocker (296 blocks) on Feb. 20 at Northern Michigan and currently ranks second in rebounds (989 rebounds) and third in points scored (1,826 points). After averaging a double-double as a junior, Boensch was named to the 2018-19 WBCA All-America honorable mention team.
Boensch leads the GLIAC in rebounding, blocked shots (102), free-throws made (140), and double-doubles (15), while ranking second in points per game and field goal percentage (58.0 percent). The senior also anchored the GVSU defense that ranks second in the nation in scoring defense (49.4 points per game allowed), third in blocked shots (6.3) and fifth in three-point field goal defense (25.6 percent).
Nine of the 15 members of the 2019-20 Academic All-America® Division II Women’s Basketball teams have at least a 3.90 G.P.A., with two student-athletes maintaining a perfect 4.00 GPA. The five members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.96.
The 2019-20 Academic All-America® Division II Women’s Basketball teams have five repeat performers –
Kallie Bildner (Lindenwood University), Boensch,
Tiffany Lapotsky (East Stroudsburg University),
Emily Miller (Roberts Wesleyan College) and
Alexy Mollenhauer (Anderson (S.C.) University) - from last year’s CoSIDA Academic All-America® teams.
