AUSTIN, Texas – Sophomore men’s golfer
Jon Hopkins of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College headlines the 2020 Academic All-America® College Division Men’s At-Large Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Hopkins was named the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for College Division men’s at-large.
The college division includes two-year institutions, Canadian institutions and any United States four-year institutions that are not affiliated with the NCAA or NAIA.
Despite the cancellation of spring competition during COVID-19, CoSIDA continued its sponsorship of the Academic All-America awards program. Student-athletes were selected based on career statistics.
Hopkins, a sophomore from Bishop’s Stortford, England, was named to the NJCAA Division II PING All-America team as he won three of the seven tournaments he competed in during the 2019-20 season. Hopkins, who has a 3.95 cumulative grade-point average as a business major, only finished outside of the top seven in a tournament once. Hopkins led the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges with a 70.17 scoring average, winning the Hubert Tucker Award and earning All-MACJC first team accolades. Hopkins, who has signed to play golf at NCAA Division I’s Florida Gulf Coast University this fall, is a finalist for the Jack Nicklaus Award, which will be announced at next month’s Memorial Tournament.
Hopkins, was named to the NJCAA Division II PING All-America second team in 2018-19 as he won three of the 12 tournaments he played and never finished worse than ninth place. He tied for eighth place at the 2019 NJCAA Division II National Championship, earning all-tournament and NJCAA All-America first team honorees. Hopkins was also a semifinalist for the Jack Nicklaus Award.
The 10 members of the first team had an average GPA of 3.93 as five student-athletes had a perfect 4.0 GPA.
