AUSTIN, Texas – Merrimack College lacrosse senior attacker Charlie Bertrand headlines the 2019-2020 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Men’s At-Large teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Bertrand has been selected as the 2019-2020 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team Members of the Year for Division I at-large men.

Despite the cancellation of spring competition during COVID-19, CoSIDA continued its sponsorship of the Academic All-America awards program. Student-athletes were selected based on career statistics.

A native of Baldwinsville, New York, Bertrand was the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for Division II in 2019. With his selection this year, he is now a three-time Academic All-American®, earning first team honors twice (2019 and 2020), and second team accolades once (2018). Bertrand posted a 3.91 GPA as a mechanical engineering major at Merrimack in 2019-2020.

On the field, Bertrand was a three-time USILA All-American and was named the USILA National Player of the Year and USILA Top Attackman twice (2018 and 2019). A two-time NCAA Elite 90 Award winner, he helped the Warriors to back-to-back NCAA Division II National Championships in 2018 and 2019.

In Merrimack’s first year of Division I membership this spring, Bertrand started in all six games and led the Warriors with 18 goals and 23 points before the COVID-19 pandemic halted the spring sports season. He scored a season-best six goals against Dartmouth Feb. 15. In addition, he continued his streak of registering a point in every single game he has played in (58 games), which was the longest streak in the country. Bertrand has posted at least one goal in every game of his career.

No less than 31 of 46 members of the 2019-2020 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Men’s At-Large teams have at least a 3.90 GPA, with 20 student-athletes maintaining a 4.00 GPA as either undergraduate or graduate students. The 16 members of the first team (which was expanded due to ties in the voting) have an average GPA of 3.96.

In addition to Bertrand, the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Men’s At-Large teams feature 11 other repeat performers including Adam Brubacher (RIT), Phil Gross (Brown University), Daniel Hein (University of Missouri), Miki Jauhiainen (Brigham Young University), Eric Knowles (North Carolina State University), David Koenders (West Virginia University), Jannik Opitz (Western Michigan University), Scott Piper (Michigan State University), Coley Sullivan (Brown University), Conor Gaffney (Lehigh University) and Edwin Hookenson (Minnesota State University, Mankato). Lehigh’s Gaffney joins Bertrand as a three-time selection.
