AUSTIN, Texas – Senior Katie Bacher of MIT headlines the 2019-20 Academic All-America® Division III Track & Field/Cross Country Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Despite the cancellation of spring competition as a result of COVID-19, CoSIDA continued its sponsorship of the Academic All-America awards program. Student-athletes were selected based on career statistics/results.

Bacher, a native of Macungie, Pennsylvania, is the Academic All-America® Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country Team Member of the Year. She recently graduated from MIT with degrees in electrical engineering and computer science with a 4.00 GPA.

Bacher competed in four NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships in her career and was a four-time NEWMAC All-Conference performer in cross country. She is a four-time United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region honoree in cross country. She qualified for the 2020 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championship in the mile run.

Among the 46 student-athletes selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division III Track & Field/Cross Country women's team, 16 carry a 4.0 grade-point average. The 17 members of the women’s track & field/cross country first team carry an average GPA of 3.94.

There are 13 women who repeat as Academic All-America® selections this year including four three-time performers.

Bacher highlights the quartet of three-time selections on the women’s track & field/cross country team. She is a first team selection in 2020 and 2019 with second team recognition in 2018. Jenna Melanson of MIT is on the first team this season following first team honors in 2019 and she was a member of the second team in 2018. Both Emma Roberts of Benedictine University and  Emmalyn Lindsey of Carnegie Mellon are on the first team this season, after garnering second team honors in 2019 and third team recognition in 2018.

Eka Jose of Washington University in St. Louis, Michelle Karabin of Carnegie Mellon and MIT’s Margaret Trautner are each repeat honorees on the first team of the women’s track & field/cross country team this season after also earning first team recognition in 2019. Paige Lawler of Washington University in St. Louis and Suffolk University’s Emily Manfra are each on the first team this year after earning second team honors in 2019. Wheaton College (Ill.) senior Favor Ezewuzie, a first team honoree this year, was a third team pick in 2019. The Division III Academic All-America® program is financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2019-20 Division III Academic All-America® teams.
