AUSTIN, Texas – Senior
Derek Manning of Elizabethtown College headlines the 2020 Academic All-America® Division III baseball teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Despite the cancellation of spring competition as a result of COVID-19, CoSIDA continued its sponsorship of the Academic All-America awards program. Student-athletes were selected based on career statistics.
Manning, a computer engineering major, has been selected as the recipient of the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year award for Division III baseball. The East Petersburg, Pennsylvania product recently graduated from Elizabethtown with a 4.0 cumulative GPA. Manning has accepted a full scholarship into the University of Wisconsin’s computer science Ph.D. program.
A first team selection this year to the Division III Academic All-America® Team, Manning is now a three-time first team Academic All-America® honoree. He was also a member of the first team in 2019 and as a sophomore in 2018. Manning was named a Third Team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) in 2018, and was honored as the 2018 Landmark Conference Player of the Year. He finished his Elizabethtown career with a career batting average of .430 and 169 hits. He also tallied 99 RBI and scored 99 runs, with 54 career doubles and 13 home runs.
Four of the 33 members of the 2020 Academic All-America® Division III baseball teams have a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA. The 11 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.86 and the 33 student-athletes that make up all three teams have an average cumulative GPA of 3.78.
Nine of this year’s 33 student-athletes on the three teams are repeat honorees from 2019. Manning is one of two members of this year’s first team that are selections for the third time in their career.
Matt Johnston of MIT is the other three-time honoree among this year’s selections. Johnston, a first team pick as an outfielder this year, was a second team selection in 2019. Additionally, Johnston was named a third team pick as an outfielder in 2018.
Pitchers
Garrett Renslow of Rochester and
Christian Slattery of California Lutheran are repeat first team selections this season, following first team recognition in 2019. Oswego State’s
Ryan Enos is a first team Academic All-America® performer this season, paired with his first team accolades in the 2019 campaign. Infielder
Allen Murphy of St. John Fisher is a first team pick as an infielder in 2020, following first team honors in 2019.
Garrett Wilson, an outfielder from Spalding University, is a repeat selection. A first team pick this season, Wilson was a second team member in 2019. Designated hitter

The Division III Academic All-America® program is financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2019-20 Division III Academic All-America® teams.
