AUSTIN, Texas – Senior quarterback Justin Herbert of the University of Oregon has been named the 2019-20 Academic All-America® of the Year for Division I, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A general science major from Eugene, Oregon, owns a 4.01 cumulative grade-point average. He was named to the Academic All-America® team three times and has been recognized as the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year in football for two consecutive seasons.
“It’s a huge honor,” said Herbert. “It’s a reflection of the University of Oregon and our football program. The way we did things on and off the field, the way that Coach Cristobal and Coach Arroyo did things and what they emphasized set the standard for everyone.
“I couldn’t have done it without them, I couldn’t have done it without the Jaqua Center staff at the University of Oregon and all the remarkable opportunities we were given,” added Herbert. “I just put the work in and they gave me the opportunities. I couldn’t be more thankful.”
Herbert tossed at least one passing touchdown in 40 of his 42 starts, including 35 straight contests from Oct. 8, 2016, to Oct. 26, 2019. He ranked second in the Pac-12 in completions (286), while ranking third in yards per game (247.9) and total yards (3,471), and was 11th in NCAA Division I in overall passing touchdowns (32).
The sixth overall pick in the National Football League Draft this spring by the Los Angeles Chargers, Herbert completed 286 out of 428 passing attempts for 3,471 yards with 32 touchdowns and just six interceptions in 2019.
Herbert led the Ducks to the Pac-12 championship with a 37-15 win over the University of Utah and was named the Rose Bowl Offensive Most Valuable Player in Oregon’s 28-27 victory over the University of Wisconsin. It was the third fourth-quarter comeback that Herbert orchestrated during the 2019 season.
Herbert is first among active FBS leaders in passing TDs (95) and third in passing yards (10,541). He only threw 23 interceptions and had a 64.0 completion percentage in his career.
Herbert received the William V. Campbell Award (Academic Heisman) and was the Pac-12 Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year. He was also named to the Associated Press Pac-12 all-conference second team and was named the MVP of the Senior Bowl. Herbert also was a finalist for the Manning Award and was a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien, Maxwell and Walter Camp awards.
Grace Barry of Concordia (Neb.) University was named the CoSIDA NAIA Academic All-America® of the Year Monday (July 20) while Bebe Wang of Denison University was named the CoSIDA Division III Academic All-America® of the Year Tuesday (July 21) and Amanda Kautzer of Michigan Technological University was honored with the CoSIDA Division II Academic All-America® of the Year Wednesday (July 22).
Justin Herbert was named MVP of the 2020 Rose Bowl and the 2020 Senior Bowl.
Herbert rushed for three touchdowns in the Ducks Rose Bowl win over Wisconsin.
Herbert is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-America® of the year for NCAA Division I football.
Herbert was picked 6th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Chargers.
