AUSTIN, Texas – For the second consecutive season, Pennsylvania State University senior defender Kerry Abello headlines the 2021 Academic All-America® Division I women’s soccer teams selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and announced Friday.
 
Abello has been named the 2021 Academic All-America® of the Year for Division I wen’s soccer. Abello joins 2021 men's repeat winner Kyle Hiebert as the first student-athletes to earn the distinction twice in soccer for Division I (formerly university division). They become the first duo in any sport in CoSIDA Academic All-America program history to earn back-to-back Academic All-America® of the Year honors in the same seasons.
 
Abello, a native of from Batavia, Illinois, is graduating this December with a 4.0 GPA while double majoring in biological life science and Spanish. It is her fourth Academic All-America® recognition, earning first team accolades each of the last three seasons, and a second team honor in 2018. She becomes the first women’s player to earn four Academic All-America® honors and the first Division I (university division) player to earn three First Team honors. A captain for the Nittany Lions, she is a three-time United Soccer Coaches All-Region selection and a three-time All-Big Ten selection.
  
Sixteen of the 34 members of the Academic All-America® Division I women’s soccer teams sport a perfect 4.0 GPA in either undergrad or graduate school. The 11 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.95, with the complete 34-member women’s team averaging a 3.94 GPA.
 
Along with Abello, Hannah Webb (Oklahoma State University) becomes a three-time honoree, earning first team honors in 2020-21 and third team honors in 2019. Ten others join Abello and Webb as repeat performers from last year’s teams – Jill Aguilera (University of Arizona), Natalie Beckman (University of Denver),  Lauren Chang (University of South Carolina),  Sam Coffey (Pennsylvania State University), Peyton DePriest (Middle Tennessee State University), Delaney Graham (Duke University), Rachel Jones (University of North Carolina), Lucy Porter (Hofstra University), Sarah Sodoma (Arkansas State University), and Emily Smith (University of California). Gabby Carle (Florida State University) also earned her second honor after being named to the first team in 2019.
