Iowa State Tight End Charlie Kolar Headlines 2021 Academic All-America® NCAA Division I Football Team

AUSTIN, Texas – Charlie Kolar, a graduate student tight end from Iowa State University, headlines the 2021-22 Academic All-America® Division I football teams selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), it was announced Wednesday.
 
Kolar has been named the 2021-22 Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for Division I football.
 
A native of Norman, Okla., Kolar graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in December 2020, with a 3.99 GPA and currently has a perfect 4.00 GPA as he pursues a master’s degree in finance.
 
Now a three-time Academic All-America® First Team honoree and the winner of the prestigious 2021 William V. Campbell Trophy, Kolar ranks second at Iowa State and fifth in the Big 12 with 723 receiving yards and is tied for the team lead and tied for sixth in the conference with five receiving touchdowns. He set new program, single-season tight end records for receptions (58) and receiving yards (723) while helping the Cyclones to a 7-5 record during the 2021 regular season.
 
Iowa State is scheduled to wrap up its season against Clemson in the 2021 Cheez-It Bowl on Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla.
 
The 2021-22 Academic All-America® Division I Football Team features 14 members with a 4.00 GPA and 22 members with at least a 3.90 GPA as either undergraduate or graduate student-athletes. The 25-member first team have an average GPA of 3.72.
 
The 2021-22 Academic All-America® Division I Football Teams have 25 repeat honorees from the 2020, 2019 and 2018 teams including Kolar, Jake Chisholm (Dayton), Austin Williams (Mississippi State), Blaise Andries (Minnesota), Jake Dixon (Duquesne), Wes Genant (South Dakota State), Mike Van Hoeven (Eastern Michigan), Anders Carlson (Auburn), Thomas Booker (Stanford), Matt Henningsen (Wisconsin), Jack Gibbens (Minnesota), Silas Kelly (Coastal Carolina), Patrick Fields (Oklahoma), Kekaula Kaniho (Boise State), K.J. Smith (North Alabama), Noah Williams (Stanford), Brock Purdy (Iowa State), Ezra Gray, (Alabama State), Britain Covey (Utah), Austin Stidham (Troy), Juwuan Jones (Western Kentucky), Ryan Greenhagen (Fordham), Riley Whimpey (Boise State), Spencer DeMedal (Duquesne) and Robby Hauck (Montana). Kolar, Chisholm, Andries, Genant, Kaniho, Smith, Gray and DeMedal are three-time Academic All-America® selections.
 
In addition, the 2021-22 Academic All-America® football teams have seven members who are competing in the College Football Playoff: Desmond Ridder (Cincinnati), Alec Pierce (Cincinnati), Aidan Hutchinson (Michigan), Lorenz Metz (Cincinnati), Andrew Vastardis (Michigan), David Ojabo (Michigan) and Bryan Cook (Cincinnati). There are four members competing in the Football Championship Subdivision semifinals this weekend: Wes Genant (South Dakota State), Reece Winkelman (South Dakota State), Troy Andersen (Montana State) and Lane Tucker (North Dakota State).
