Giovanna Tapigliani
AUSTIN, Texas – Missouri Baptist University graduate student
Giovanna Tapigliani headlines the Academic All-America® NAIA volleyball team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The NAIA Academic All-America® program is financially supported by the NAIA national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2021-22 NAIA Academic All-America® teams.
For the second straight season Tapigliani was named the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for NAIA women’s volleyball. The São Paulo, Brazil native is the first student-athlete to earn the award in back-to-back seasons since Paula Ferreira of Columbia (Mo.) did so in 2010-11. In total seven student-athletes were named to the first team with four individuals earning All-America honors for a second straight season, which includes three repeat first-team honorees in
Jacey Blust (Indiana Institute of Technology),
Isidora Stojovic (Missouri Baptist) and Tapigliani.
The 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for the NAIA, Tapigliani posted a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average in her Masters of Business Administration graduate work after earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a 4.0 GPA. The opposite hitter for the back-to-back NAIA National Champions, also excelled on the court as the American Midwest Conference All-Conference first team selection had a career year with a team-best 432 kills, a .353 hitting percentage, 189 digs, 87 blocks and team-best 39 service aces. A two-time NAIA All-America first team and NAIA All-Tournament selection, she finished the season ranked in the NAIA Top 20 in points per set (8th), kills per set (12th) and hitting percentage (19th).
In addition to leading the Spartans to back-to-back NAIA National Championships, Tapigliani joins teammate Stojovic as the only Spartans to ever be two-time CoSIDA All-America® first team honorees. Tapigliani is also one of four student-athletes to earn a 4.0 GPA. Oklahoma City University’s
Sophia Salak moved up to the first team after being a second-team honoree last year.
The first-team featured three seniors, two graduate students, one junior and a sophomore while the second team had five seniors, one graduate student and one junior. Missouri Baptist led all programs with three honorees while Taylor University had two.
