AUSTIN, Texas – Senior
Jasper Yang of Grinnell College headlines the 2021 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division III men’s soccer teams selected by the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA) and announced Wednesday.
Yang, a biology major from Stow, Massachusetts, and Nielan, a mechanical engineering/computer science major from Danville, California, are both three-time CoSIDA Academic All-America® honorees.
Yang led Grinnell in scoring this season with 24 goals and six assists for 54 points. Eight of his goals were game-winners and he was a first team All-Midwest Conference honoree for the third time in his career. Yang also has been named to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-Region team twice.
Thirteen men are repeat CoSIDA Academic All-America® selections with
Justin Howe (Cornell College) and
Charlie Widing (Hobart) joining Yang as three-time honorees. Howe was a first team honoree in 2020-21 after earning third team honors in 2019. Widing joined Howe on that 2019 third team before moving up to second team last year.
The 35-member men’s team has an average GPA of 3.87 with the first team posting a 3.89. Seven members: Widing,
Eli Szymanski (St. Mary’s of Minnesota),
Ethan Kalis (Carnegie Mellon),
Aiden Becken (Saint John’s),
Logan Falzarano (Johns Hopkins),
Aiden Westerberg (North Central), and
Yusef Muqtadir (Wilmington) had perfect 4.0 GPAs.
Nine schools have multiple honorees with MIT’s seven combined (five women, two men) leading the way. Loras and Johns Hopkins both are represented by two men and two women with Messiah, Tufts, and Westminster all putting two men on the team. Carnegie Mellon is represented by three women and one man while Grove City and North Central both have one man and one woman. Messiah rounds out the multiple honorees by adding one woman to their mix for a total of three combined selections.
The Division III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2021-22 Division III Academic All-America® teams program.
