AUSTIN, Texas – Ohio Dominican University senior quarterback Evan Ernst headlines the Academic All-America® Division II football team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2020-21 Division II Academic All-America® program.

Ernst is the recipient of the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for NCAA Division II football. A first-time Academic All-America® selection, Ernst hails from Mason, Ohio. Ernst is one of 23 seniors or graduate students (out of 26 honorees) to land on this year’s first team.

Ernst and his Panther teammates played an abbreviated spring season. Based on the absence of most fall sports competition, the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Committee revised some rules and procedures for nominating student-athletes this season. Due to the low percentage of games completed this season, the nominees were selected based on career statistics and achievements.

A finance major with a sterling 4.00 cumulative grade-point average, Ernst earned All-Great Midwest Athletic Conference honors for the third straight season this spring. He completed 67.8 percent of his passes for 986 yards in six games. Ernst led the G-MAC in completion percentage, while his passing efficiency rating of 123.1 was third-best in the league.

Ernst threw a season-high three touchdowns in the spring finale against Hillsdale, giving him seven passing scores for the year. He also added a pair of rushing touchdowns for the Panthers. In 2019, Ernst ranked eighth nationally in completion percentage as he connected on 168-of-257 passes for 1,911 yards and 17 touchdowns.

For his career, Ernst has guided Ohio Dominican to a 20-6 overall record (16-5 G-MAC) as a starter. He was number one in the NCAA Division II in completion percentage and passing efficiency as a redshirt freshman in 2018. Ernst and the Panthers won nine games in his first season as a starter.

The 26 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II football first team members hold a composite 3.82 undergraduate GPA. Ten first team honorees hold a 3.94 or better cumulative GPA. Nine CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II football selections are repeat picks with eight of the veterans making the 2020-21 first team.

Four student-athletes make the Academic All-America® Division II football first team for the second season in a row: Slippery Rock University graduate student wide receiver Henry Litwin, Colorado State University-Pueblo senior tight end Preston Guerra, Stonehill College senior offensive lineman Derek Ivey and Shepherd University graduate student defensive lineman Ricky Robinson.

Four players make the jump from second team Academic All-America® in 2019 to first team this year: Wingate University graduate student offensive lineman Andrew Strickland, Concord University senior defensive lineman JT Turner, Emporia State University senior linebacker Jace McDown and Texas A&M University-Commerce graduate student defensive back Alex Shillow.

Gannon University senior tight end Jordan Smith rounds out the Academic All-America® Division II football veterans with his 2020-21 second team nod. Smith made the first team in 2018. Smith is one of five Academic All-America® selections with a perfect 4.00 undergraduate GPA.

Five of the 12 graduate students honored this year have a 4.00 GPA in their post-grad endeavors, including Slippery Rock’s Litwin and his SRU teammate, offensive lineman Austin Wayt. Shepherd’s Robinson also possesses a 4.00 GPA on his graduate school work.
