Alexis Cardoza
AUSTIN, Texas – California State University San Bernardino senior outside hitter
Alexis Cardoza headlines the Academic All-America® Division II volleyball team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2020-21 Division II Academic All-America® program.
Cardoza is the recipient of the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for NCAA Division II volleyball. A second team Academic All-America® choice in 2019, the Chino Hills, California, native is one of seven student-athletes to land on this year’s first team.
Cardoza and the Yotes didn’t compete this past season. Based on the absence of most fall sports competition, the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Committee revised some rules and procedures for nominating student-athletes this season. Due to the low percentage of games completed this season, the nominees were selected based on career statistics and achievements.
A psychology major with a 3.58 cumulative grade-point average, Cardoza was named the AVCA and D2CCA Division II Player of the Year after leading Cal State San Bernardino to the 2019 national title. The Yotes were only the third undefeated national champion in Division II volleyball history as Cardoza was tabbed the NCAA championships’ MVP.
The 2020 California Collegiate Athletic Association Female Athlete of the Year, Cardoza completed her 2019 season leading the league and ranking third in the nation in both kills (4.54) and points (5.17) per set. She did this while hitting .346 and adding 326 digs, 59 total blocks and 37 service aces. Cardoza played in all 112 sets during the 2019 NCAA championship season, notching 15 double-doubles. She compiled 20 or more kills on six occasions.
Four of the seven members of the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II volleyball first team have a perfect 4.00 GPA. The aggregate GPA for the 21 CoSIDA Academic All-America® team members is 3.87. Twenty of the team members are seniors;
Charlotte Richards from the University of Missouri-St. Louis is the lone junior.
Cardoza is one of three Academic All-America® repeat selections this year. Seniors
Faith Rottinghaus of Washburn University and
Libby Bochniak of Georgia College also possess two Academic All-America® trophies each. Rottinghaus made the first team in 2019, while Bochniak joined Cardoza on the 2019 second team.
