AUSTIN, Texas – Pitcher
Brendan Beck, a senior at Stanford University headlines the 2020-21 Academic All-America® Division I baseball team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and announced Thursday. Beck has been named the 2020-21 Academic All-America® of the Year for Division I baseball.
A native of Corona, Calif., Beck graduated from Stanford with a degree in science, technology & society while carrying a 3.63 GPA.
Beck earned All-American honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association (first team), Collegiate Baseball (second team), D1Baseball (second team), NCBWA (second team), Baseball America (third team) and Perfect Game (third team). He went 9-3 with a 3.15 earned run average in 15 starts and was named the Pac-12 Conference Pitcher of the Year to help guide Stanford to its 17th College World Series appearance in program history.
Beck, a second-round pick of the New York Yankees in the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft, struck out a Pac-12 best 143 batters while walking just 26 over 108 2/3 innings of work, finishing with a 5.50 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 11.84 strikeouts per nine innings. Beck's 143 strikeouts are the most for a Cardinal in a single season since 2003 and the fourth-most strikeouts in the nation this season.
Of the 33 members of the Academic All-America® Division I baseball team, 30 are first-time selections. Repeat selections include
Joe Lomuscio (Brown University), who was a second team honoree in 2019,
Andrew MacNeil (Stetson University), who was a third-team selection in 2020 and
Rankin Woley (Auburn University), a second team selection in 2020.
Seven of the 33 members of the Academic All-America® Division I baseball team boast a perfect 4.0 GPA in their undergraduate work or graduate school. The 12 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.75.
