AUSTIN, Texas – Pennsylvania State University senior defender Kerry Abello headlines the 2020-21 Academic All-America® Division I women’s soccer teams selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and announced Monday.
 
Abello has been named the 2020-21 Academic All-America® of the Year for Division I women’s soccer.
 
Abello, a senior from Batavia, Illinois, carries a 4.0 GPA while double majoring in science and Spanish. It is her third Academic All-America® recognition, earning first team accolades in 2019 and second team honors in 2018. As team captain she helped guide Penn State to the 2021 Big Ten regular-season championship, her third as a Nittany Lion. She was also honored as a Senior CLASS second-team All-American. Abello is a Schreyer Honors College Scholar and a member of the Penn State Presidential Leadership Academy. She has played nearly every position during her four seasons at Penn State, where she has made 53 starts and scored 15 goals with nine assists in 74 career games.
 
Eleven of the 33 members of the Academic All-America® Division I women’s soccer teams sport a perfect 4.0 GPA in either undergrad or graduate school. The 11 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.96, with the complete33-member women’s team averaging a 3.88 GPA.
 
Along with Abello, the Academic All-America® Division I women’s soccer teams have four other repeat performers from last year’s teams – Caroline Chipman (University of Georgia), Hannah Webb (Oklahoma State University), Madison Haley (Stanford University), and Victoria Tran (U.S. Naval Academy).
