Alex Vencel
AUSTIN, Texas – Senior goalkeeper
Alexander Vencel of West Texas A&M University headlines the 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II Men's Soccer teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2020-21 Division II Academic All-America® program.
Based on the absence of most fall sports competition, the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Committee revised some rules and procedures for nominating student-athletes this season. Due to the low percentage of games completed this season, the nominees were selected based on career statistics and achievements.
Vencel has been selected as the recipient of the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for Division II men's soccer.
A computer science major with a 4.00 GPA, Vencel becomes a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-America® after being named to the first team in 2018. He led West Texas A&M to an 8-2-0 record and the Lone Star Conference regular season and tournament titles. The Buffs finished the shortened spring season ranked seventh in the United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25. The senior goalkeeper owned a 0.55 goals-against average, allowing just six goals while recording five shutouts, including a 1-0 win over Midwestern State University in the LSC championship match.
A native of Mittelhausbergen, France, Vencel was named the Lone Star Fred Jacoby Male Academic Athlete of the Year. He became the fourth Buff to earn the prestigious honor. He is a two-time men's soccer academic player of the year.
Vencel concludes his four-year career having started 54 contests and ranks in the top five in program history in wins (35) and shutouts (23). He enjoyed his finest season in 2018, earning United Soccer Coaches All-South Central Region third team honors and second team All-Heartland Conference accolades. He ended the year with an 11-2-2 record with nine shutouts, allowing just eight goals.
Twenty-four of the 33 members of the 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II Men’s Soccer teams have at least a 3.80 GPA, with seven student-athletes maintaining a perfect 4.00 GPA. The 12 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.93.
The Academic All-America® Division II Men’s Soccer teams have two other previous members –
Yannik Felber (Franklin Pierce University), a first team selection in 2019 after earning second team honors in 2018, and
Travis Swallow (Seattle Pacific University), a second team choice in 2019.
