Sara Sandberg
AUSTIN, Texas – Senior forward
Sara Sandberg of Flagler College headlines the 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II Women's Soccer teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2020-21 Division II Academic All-America® program.
Based on the absence of most fall sports competition, the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Committee revised some rules and procedures for nominating student-athletes this season. Due to the low percentage of games completed this season, the nominees were selected based on career statistics and achievements.
Sandberg has been selected as the recipient of the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for Division II women's soccer. It marks the second time in a row that a member of the Flagler women’s team was selected the Team Member of the Year after Charlène Nowotny was similarly honored in 2019.
A psychology major with a 3.97 grade-point average, Sandberg earned CoSIDA Academic All-America® first team accolades for the second consecutive year. The Örebro, Sweden native started 53 career matches and scored 44 goals with 19 assists for 107 total points. Flagler posted an 8-0-2 record while playing this past spring, winning the Peach Belt Conference championship. The forward was a first team All-Peach Belt Conference selection for the third time while finishing with four goals and two assists.
Sandberg enjoyed a decorated career for the Saints, as she was a 2019 United Soccer Coaches All-America first team selection, a two-time D2CCA all-region honoree, and a three-time All-Peach Belt member. She was the D2CCA Southeast Region and PBC Player of the Year in 2019. In addition, she was a two-time academic all-conference selection and PBC Presidential Honor Roll scholar. Sandberg was a recipient of the D2 ADA award in 2018.
After playing at UNC Charlotte as a freshman, Sandberg transferred to Flagler and scored a team-high 15 goals, along with six assists, for 36 points in 2018. In 2019, she scored 25 goals with 11 assists for 61 points. She would finish second in Division II in goals, third in points and game-winning goals (8), and fourth in points per game (2.44). That included a school-record 10 points in a match, vs. Eckerd, and tying the record for most goals in a match (4).
Twenty-two of the 33 members of the 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II Women’s Soccer teams have at least a 3.90 GPA, with 10 student-athletes maintaining a perfect 4.00 GPA. The 12 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.95.
The 2020-21 Academic All-America® Division II Women’s Soccer teams have four repeat performers – Sandberg,
Mackenzie Dawes (Ferris State University),
Lira Mathes (Carson-Newman University),
Jenny Vetter (Minnesota State University, Mankato) - from the 2019 CoSIDA Academic All-America® teams.
