AUSTIN, Texas – Senior Turner Washington of Arizona State University headlines the 2021 Academic All-America® Division I Men's Track & Field/Cross Country teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Washington, a biological sciences - conservation biology & ecology major with a 4.00 GPA, has been named the 2021 Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for Division I men’s track & field/cross country.

Washington, from Tucson, Ariz., is one of the most dominant throwers in track & field. Washington ended the year with eight of the top-10 seasonal marks in the discus, seven of the top-10 seasonal marks in the outdoor shot put, and four of the top-10 seasonal marks in the indoor shot put - including the collegiate record of 21.85m (71-8¼). Washington's huge 66.26m (217-5) mark in the discus also made him the No. 7 performer in collegiate history. The Sun Devil is the only man in collegiate history with current all-time top-10 efforts in both the discus and any shot put. Washington was a perfect 14-0 in collegiate competition through both the indoor and outdoor seasons. He broke the collegiate indoor shot record at just the second meet of the year before going on to win the NCAA indoor shot title a month later in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Moving outdoors, Washington never threw shorter than 68 feet and ultimately hit his outdoor PR (21.10m/69-2.75) at the NCAA Championships en route to his second title of 2021. Washington broke the ASU program discus record four times this year too.

Of the 45 members on the Academic All-America® Division I men’s track & field/cross country team, 11 boast a perfect 4.0 GPA. The 15 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.92. Eleven student-athletes were repeat selections on Academic All-America® Division I men’s track & field/cross country team from previous years – Zack Anderson (University of South Dakota), Jovaine Atkinson (Liberty University), Kevin Cahoy (University of Nebraska), Casey Comber (Villanova University), Rile DeMeulenaere (Loyola University Chicago), Olin Hacker (University of Wisconsin), Vincent Kiprop (University of Alabama), Yared Nugose (University of Notre Dame), Luke Siedhoff (University of Nebraska), Mick Stanovsek (University of Washington) and Matthew Scarpill (St. Joseph’s University).
