Rachel Massaro of Queens University of Charlotte has been named as the 2020-21 Academic All-America® Overall Team Member of the Year for NCAA Division II, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The Academic All-America® Division II program is financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2020-21 Division II Academic All-America® teams.
“It has been a tremendous honor to represent Queens University of Charlotte over the last four years,” said Massaro. “I am very honored and humbled to receive this award, as I know there are many talented DII student-athletes. I cannot thank my family, friends, teammates, coaches, and University faculty enough. This would not have been possible without their unwavering support.”
Massaro, who is from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, collected six individual national championships during her Queens career. A 19-time All-American, she led the Royals to three NCAA Division II national team titles. Queens won four Bluegrass Mountain Conference crowns as Massaro earned 10 BMC individual championships.
“When I think of Rachel, I think of a leader amongst leaders,” said Queens Director of Athletics
Cherie Swarthout. “Rachel embraced her team’s values along with the values of our department. She was purposeful in her leadership, nurturing with her peers, and committed to leaving a legacy. We see with this award her legacy continues to grow.”
A third team Academic All-America® selection as a junior, Massaro recorded a 3.97 cumulative grade-point average with her finance major. She is a member of the Queens’ quartet which currently holds the NCAA Division II record in the 200 Medley Relay. Massaro was named the Queens senior female Student-Athlete of the Year award winner this spring.
“Rachel continues to collect recognition for the tireless work she put into the classroom,” said Queens Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Planning and Leadership Development/Director of Swimming Operations Jeff Dugdale. “Rachel continues to collect recognition for the tireless work she put into the classroom. She trusted the system and embraced change that led to great success. She sought out opportunities to challenge herself, leveraged all the resources offered at Queens, and made her team and her peers bigger than herself.”
