AUSTIN, Texas – Maria Genovese, a tennis star for Georgia Gwinnett College, headlines the Academic All-America® NAIA Women’s At-Large team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The NAIA Academic All-America® program is financially supported by the NAIA national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2020-21 NAIA Academic All-America® teams.

Genovese was named the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for the NAIA Women’s At-Large Team.

Genovese and the NAIA men's at-large Academic All-America of the Year Andrew Clifford (College of Idaho) are each the second individuals to earn first-team honors in the at-large category for their respective genders. Both individuals are also the second from their institutions to receive Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year honors. Nine student-athletes from the men's and women's at-large teams are repeat selections from last season.

Genovese, a junior English major, captured the NAIA individual national championship and played No. 1 singles for GGC's NAIA national championship team during the 2020-21 season. The Lewisville, Texas, native had a 24-1 singles record during the 2020-21 season to earn first NAIA All-America team and Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles and doubles All-America team honors. She received the ITA south region's Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award.

Genovese also excelled in the classroom with a 3.97 cumulative grade-point average while all 11 members of the first-team had at least a 3.84 undergraduate GPA or a 4.0 graduate GPA. Three student-athletes posted 4.0 marks.

In all, 15 of the 21 first team honorees between the two teams were seniors or graduate students and 28 of the 42 members of the CoSIDA Academic All-American® team posted a 3.90 undergraduate GPA or better.
