Four talented student-athletes highlight 2022 men's soccer Academic All-America® teams; de Lange wins top honor for the second time

AUSTIN, Texas – Four standouts headline a group of outstanding student-athletes named to the 2022 Academic All-America® men’s soccer teams as selected by College Sports Communicators.
 
Niclas Wild from UNC Greensboro, Henri Tophoven from Florida Southern College, Justin Cross from Stevens Institute of Technology, and Kevin de Lange of Shawnee State University lead the Academic All-America® teams by being named as the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for NCAA Divisions I, II, and III as well as the NAIA, respectively.
 
The four Academic All-America® teams, totaling 124 players, have a 3.88 average grade-point average with 36 members posting a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Niclas Wild, a goalkeeper from Berlin, Germany and an economics major, is one of the four members of the Division I Academic All-America® team with a 4.0 GPA. The 2021 and 2022 Southern Conference Goalkeeper of the Year, Wild helped No. 12 seed UNCG to an Elite 8 appearance in the NCAA Tournament with a 0.929 goals-against average and five shutouts in 1,840 minutes played.
 
He is a two-time first team All-SoCon selection.
 
There are six repeat selections to the Division I Academic All-America® team: Hendrik Hebbeker and Stefan Mason (Hofstra University), Billy Hency (Loyola University Chicago), Aaron Denk Garcia (West Virginia University), JP Armbruster (Belmont University) and Kian Yari (Missouri State University).
 
The Division I team boasted a 3.88 average GPA with the first team checking in at 3.91.

Henri Tophoven is a forward from Bruggen, Germany and an MBA student at Florida Southern. As an undergrad majoring in retail and consumer behavior, Tophoven had a perfect 4.0 GPA at both the University of Wisconsin and Mercyhurst University.
 
This season, Tophoven was named to the Division II Conference Commissioners Association All-America second team after coming to FSC as a grad transfer. In 16 games this year, he had 16 goals and three assists for 35 points.
 
Division II had eight repeat selections: Harri Lovett (Chowan University), Ryan McCully (Northeastern State University), Sergio Del Castillo (Gannon University), Michael Sprauer (Colorado School of Mines), Kristian Hooker (Regis University), Jonny Stephens (Cedarville University), Lorenzo Valentini (Northwest Nazarene University), and Edin Hernandez (University of Montevallo).
 
The first team from Division II matched its Division I counterparts with a 3.91 average GPA and the full team posted a 3.86.

Justin Cross, from Kendall Park, New Jersey, led Stevens into the national semifinals as its starting goalkeeper. In his first season as the Ducks starter, Cross posted a 0.44 goals-against average and 63 saves in 2,031 minutes of action. Twelve of his 16 wins have come with a clean sheet and he had 10 shutouts to his credit.
 
He was named third team All-America and first team All-Region IV by the United Soccer Coaches as well as first team All-MAC Freedom. Cross has a 3.99 GPA as a biomedical engineering major.
 
Five members of the DIII team were selected last year: Aidan Becken (Saint John’s (Minn.), Logan Falzarano (Johns Hopkins University), Luke Groothoof (Messiah University), Aidan Westerberg (North Central College), and Sam Belitz (Grove City College).
 
The complete Division III team had a 3.89 average GPA with the first team boasting a 3.93.

Kevin de Lange is business major from Genemuiden, Netherlands and carries a 3.99 GPA. A four-year starter for Shawnee State, de Lange earned second team All-Mid-South honors this season with 18 goals and nine assists for 45 points. He finished fifth in the nation in total points. De Lange was named to the 2020-21 Academic All-America® first team as well as being that season’s Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year.
 
The Bears finished the year with an 11-8 record and advanced to the second round of the Mid-South Tournament. De Lange finished his career with 61 goals and 28 assists for 150 points.
 
The final six repeat selections come from the NAIA: Juan Manuel Collazo (St. Thomas (Fla.) University), Nicolo Tossici (Missouri Baptist University), Lucas Garcia (Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) University), Justin Eisenmann (Olivet Nazarene University), Tommaso Ogliari (University of the Cumberlands), and Rodrigo Albuquerque (Mid-America Christian University).
 
NAIA led the four Academic All-America® teams with a 3.90 average GPA and the NAIA first team tied with Division III for the top spot at 3.93.
