Four talented student-athletes headline 2022-23 men's basketball Academic All-America® teams; Vander Plas repeats in Division I

AUSTIN, Texas – Four standouts headline a group of outstanding student-athletes named to the 2022-23 Academic All-America® men’s basketball teams as selected by the College Sports Communicators.
 
Ben Vander Plas from the University of Virginia, John Paul Kromka from the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, Josh Angle from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and Riley Minix of Southeastern University lead the Academic All-America® teams by being named as the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for NCAA Divisions I, II, and III as well as the NAIA, respectively.
 
The four Academic All-America® teams, totaling 55 players, have a 3.87 average grade-point average with 16 members posting a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Ben Vander Plas, a forward from Ripon, Wisconsin, is a graduate transfer student, holding a perfect 4.00 grade-point average in his professional learning program at Virginia. He was named the 2021-22 Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year at Ohio, where he averaged 14.2 points per game, 6.8 rebounds per game and 3.1 assists per contest and was selected to the All-MAC first team.
 
Prior to suffering a season-ending injury last week, Vander Plas helped Virginia earn the No. 2 seed at the ACC Championship. He started 14 contests and saw playing time in 29 games this season, averaging 7.4 points per game and 4.6 rebounds per contest. He finished his five-year collegiate career with 1,787 points, 892 rebounds and 242 three-pointers.
 
There are seven repeat selections to the Division I Academic All-America® team: Josh Bannan (University of Montana), Matt Dentlinger (South Dakota State University), Tanner Groves (University of Oklahoma), Chris Ledium (Harvard University), Kahliel Spear (Robert Morris University), JT Shumate (University of Toledo) and Vander Plas.
 
The Division I team boasted a 3.86 average GPA with the first team checking in at 3.95.

John Paul Kromka, a native of Monroeville, Pennsylvania, holds the unique distinction of being named to four consecutive Academic All-America® teams, with three-consecutive first-team selections. The forward led the team with 17.3 points per game, 7.2 rebounds per contest, a 67.4 field goal percentage, and 37 steals, helping Pitt-Johnstown secure a spot in the 2023 NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Tournament.
 
The mechanical engineering major with a 3.94 GPA is a four-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Year award winner, ranking No. 5 nationally in blocks (78) and No. 2 in field goal percentage (68.4). He was named a National Association of Basketball Coaches All-American in 2021-22 and closed out his career with 1,944 points, 941 rebounds and a school record 320 blocked shots.
 
Division II had six repeat selections: Austin Andrews (University of Minnesota Duluth), Antonin Kemkeng (Thomas Jefferson University), Kromka, Matt Leritz (Bentley University), Ronnie Silva (Adelphi University) and Brendan Sullivan (Colorado School of Mines). Leritz, who is a three-time Academic All-America® selection, was the 2021-22 Division III Academic All-America® Team Member of Year while he was at Illinois Wesleyan University.
 
The Division II team boasted a 3.85 average GPA with the first team checking in at 3.88.
 
The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2022-23 Division II Academic All-America® program.

A guard hailing from Lake Oswego, Oregon, Josh Angle was named to the All-SCIAC first team for the second year in a row and currently ranks No. 19 in the country in points per game (21.5) and No. 8 in three-point field goal percentage (45.0). He has scored at least 14 points in every game this season and has a streak of 47 straight games in double figures.
 
A 2021-22 second-team All-District honoree by the NABC, Angle is making his second-straight appearance on the Academic All-America® team, earning first-team honors the last two seasons. The junior, who holds a 3.94 GPA as an economics and finance major, eclipsed the 1,000 career point mark during the 2022-23 campaign, despite only scoring 91 points during his freshman season and having his sophomore season canceled.
 
Four members of the Division III team were selected last year: Ryan Algier (University of Rochester), Angle, Kasey Draper (Roanoke College) and Elijah Hales (DePauw University).
 
Division III led the four Academic All-America® teams with a 3.91 average GPA with the first team boasting a 3.95.
 
The Division III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2022-23 Division III Academic All-America® program.

Riley Minix, a kinesiology: exercise science major with a 3.96 GPA, has led Southeastern University to back-to-back upsets in the NAIA National Tournament and a spot in the Round of 16. The small forward from Vero Beach, Florida, leads Southeastern and ranks No. 1 nationally in rebounding (13.7 per game) and No. 3 in scoring (25.3 points per game).
 
A two-time Sun Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year, Minix has scored 30 or more points in nine contests this campaign, including a season-high 41 points against Fisher. Last year, he was named to the NAIA and NABC All-America teams after averaging 22.7 points and 11.3 rebounds.
 
The final three repeat selections come from the NAIA: Jason Hubbard (Taylor University), Minix, and Jacob Vis (Dordt University).
 
The NAIA team boasted a 3.86 average GPA with the first team checking in at 3.91.
