AUSTIN, Texas – Four standouts in the pool and in the classroom – University of Virginia’s Lexi Cuomo, Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Paige Mikesell, Emory University’s Taylor Leone and University of the Cumberlands’ Hanne te Velthuis – highlight the 2022-23 Academic All- America® women’s swimming & diving teams selected by College Sports Communicators.
 
Cuomo (Division I), Mikesell (Division II), Leone (Division III) and te Velthuis (NAIA) have each been named the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for their respective divisions.

Lexi Cuomo entered the 2023 NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving National Championships as a 14-time All-American, including winning the national championship in 2022 as a member of the 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay. She helped the Cavaliers to the recent ACC Women’s Championship while part of winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays and the 200 medley relay. The senior from Clifton, Va. is a three-time All-American in 200 freestyle relay and a two-time All-American in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, along with the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. She is a Chemical Engineering major and has maintained 3.98 GPA.
 
Thirteen of the 31 members of the Academic All-America® Division I women’s swimming & diving teams boast a perfect 4.0 GPA in their undergraduate work or graduate school. The 15 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.88.
 
Five student-athletes are repeat selections on the Academic All-America® Division I women’s team (NOTE: Swimming & Diving has been part of the At-Large program) – Kaitlyn Dobler (University of Southern California), Kara Holt (University of Tennessee), Maggie MacNeil (Louisiana State University), Felicia Pasadyn (Harvard University) and Delaney Schnell (University of Arizona). MacNeil was a second team pick in 2020-21 with the University of Michigan.

NCAA Division II

Paige Mikesell, a graduate student from Clearfield, Pa., is a 17-time All-American after earning All-American certificates in six events at the 2023 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving National Championships in the 100 butterfly and the 200 IM. She placed fifth in the 100 butterfly, along with sixth-place showings in the 200 freestyle and 200 IM. She set school-record times in both the 100 butterfly (53.45) and 200 IM (2:00.82) in the prelims. Mikesell was a four-time All-American in the 100 and 200 butterfly and the 200 freestyle. She defended her Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crown in the 200 IM, giving her 12 PSAC championships. She also helped the 800 freestyle relay to a podium finish with a second-place showing. She is Health & Physical Education major with a perfect 4.0 GPA both as an undergraduate and graduate student.
 
Ten of the 34 members of the Academic All-America® Division II women’s swimming & diving teams boast a perfect 4.0 GPA in their undergraduate work or graduate school. The 10 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.93.
 
There are six repeat selections on the Academic All-America® Division II women’s swimming & diving teams (NOTE: Swimming & Diving has been part of the At-Large program) – Lily Borgenheimer and Lauren White from Colorado Mesa University, Rachel Johnson and Mikesell from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Ann Carozza (West Chester University) and Meghan Slowey (Colorado School of Mines). Mikesell is a three-time selection.
 
The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist the College Sports Communicators with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2022-23 Division II Academic All-America® program.

Taylor Leone competed in the 2023 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving National Championships this past weekend. She entered as a two-time national champion, winning the 2022 individual crowns in the 50 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay, and was an 11-time All-American. The native of Hilliard, Ohio was named the University Athletic Association Swimmer of the Year in 2022 after winning six events. She recently was the individual champion in seven events at the 2023 UAA Championships as Emory won its 24th consecutive conference championship. A graduate student majoring in Global Health, Leone had a 3.92 GPA as an undergraduate and 3.91 as a graduate student.
 
Seven of the 31 members of the Academic All-America® Division III women’s swimming & diving teams boast a perfect 4.0 GPA in their undergraduate work or graduate school. The 10 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.94.
 
Three student-athletes are repeat selections on the Academic All-America® Division III women’s swimming & diving teams (NOTE: Swimming & Diving has been part of the At-Large program) – Claire Brennan (Tufts University), Edenna Chen (MIT) and Laura Rosado (MIT). Chen and Rosado are both three-time honorees.

Hanne te Velthuis is a repeat performer on the Academic All-America® team after earning second-team honors on the 2022-23 at-large squad. She helped the University of Cumberlands to its 11th consecutive Mid-South Conference title. The Patriots went on to place fourth at the NAIA National Championships as the native of Beerzerveld, Overijssel, Netherlands was a five time All-American while competing in the 200 and 400 medley relays, and 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relay. She successfully defended her conference title in the 100 freestyle and was also on the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays and 400 medley relay at the Mid-South Conference championships. The senior has a 3.79 GPA as an Exercise & Sport Science major.
 
Two of the 14 members of the Academic All-America® NAIA women’s swimming & diving teams boast a perfect 4.0 GPA in their undergraduate work or graduate school, with six at 3.90 or better. The 14 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.83.
