Men's Track & Field/Cross Country Release (NCAA & NAIA Divisions): PDF | doc
AUSTIN, Texas – Four standouts headline a group of outstanding student-athletes named to the 2022-23 Academic All-America® men’s track & field/cross country teams as selected by the College Sports Communicators.
Turner Washington from Arizona State University,
Nathan Swadley from the Missouri University of Science & Technology,
Matthew Kearney from MIT, and
Zach Bennetts of Concordia University (Neb.) lead the Academic All-America® teams by being named as the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for NCAA Divisions I, II, and III as well as the NAIA, respectively.
The four Academic All-America® teams, totaling 179 talented student-athletes, have a 3.87 average grade-point average with 52 members posting a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Special thanks to ESPN's Holly Rowe for introducting our Team Members of the Year in the videos below.
NCAA Division I
Turner Washington, a native of Tucson, Arizona, claimed his second career NCAA national championship title in the men’s discus, winning in dramatic fashion on the final throw of the 2023 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championship earlier this month. He is the third most decorated Sun Devil in program history with five overall individual national titles (three outdoor, two indoor) and has earned nine total All-America honors.
Repeat honors are not uncommon to Washington as he has been named the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for the last three seasons. He holds a perfect 4.00 GPA as a graduate student in the Arizona State Sports, Law and Business program. Washington has twice been named to The Bowerman Watch List and was a finalist for the honor in 2021.
There are eight repeat selections to the Division I Academic All-America® team:
Jonathan Boyd (University of Tennessee at Chattanooga),
Brett Brady (U.S. Naval Academy),
Jordan Geist (University of Arizona),
Trevor Otterdahl (North Dakota State University),
Owayne Owens (University of Virginia),
Kaleb Siekmeier (University of Minnesota),
Joshua Sobota (University of Kentucky) and Washington.
The Division I team boasted a 3.84 average GPA with the first team checking in at 3.85.
