AUSTIN, Texas – Four standouts headline a group of outstanding student-athletes named to the 2022-23 Academic All-America® men’s track & field/cross country teams as selected by the College Sports Communicators.
 
Turner Washington from Arizona State University, Nathan Swadley from the Missouri University of Science & Technology, Matthew Kearney from MIT, and Zach Bennetts of Concordia University (Neb.) lead the Academic All-America® teams by being named as the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for NCAA Divisions I, II, and III as well as the NAIA, respectively.
 
The four Academic All-America® teams, totaling 179 talented student-athletes, have a 3.87 average grade-point average with 52 members posting a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Turner Washington, a native of Tucson, Arizona, claimed his second career NCAA national championship title in the men’s discus, winning in dramatic fashion on the final throw of the 2023 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championship earlier this month. He is the third most decorated Sun Devil in program history with five overall individual national titles (three outdoor, two indoor) and has earned nine total All-America honors.
 
Repeat honors are not uncommon to Washington as he has been named the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for the last three seasons. He holds a perfect 4.00 GPA as a graduate student in the Arizona State Sports, Law and Business program. Washington has twice been named to The Bowerman Watch List and was a finalist for the honor in 2021.
 
There are eight repeat selections to the Division I Academic All-America® team: Jonathan Boyd (University of Tennessee at Chattanooga), Brett Brady (U.S. Naval Academy), Jordan Geist (University of Arizona), Trevor Otterdahl (North Dakota State University), Owayne Owens (University of Virginia), Kaleb Siekmeier (University of Minnesota), Joshua Sobota (University of Kentucky) and Washington.
 
The Division I team boasted a 3.84 average GPA with the first team checking in at 3.85.

Nathan Swadley, who hails from Willard, Missouri, holds a perfect 4.00 GPA in his graduate degree as a mechanical engineering major. He capped his stellar career at Missouri University of Science & Technology by earning his fourth career All-America honor. He finished fifth at the 2023 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championship in the shot put with a career-best mark of 59-3. He exceeded his previous career-best of 59-2 1/4, which was the winning mark at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Outdoor Track Championships.
 
Swadley closed his career at Missouri University of Science & Technology as the program’s record holder in the indoor and outdoor shot put, as well as holding the program’s all-time best mark in the discus. He was the GLVC's Richard F. Scharf Paragon Award winner following the 2021-22 season. Swadley is a three-time Academic All-America® selection as he was named to the first team last year and to the second team in 2020-21.
 
Division II had 13  repeat selections: Ransom Allen (Wayne State University), D.J. Delancy (Texas A&M-Kingsville), Duncan Fuehne (Colorado School of Mines), Chase Macknair (Shippensburg University), Ryan Miller (Lock Haven), Matthew Oglesby (Pittsburg State University), Dillon Powell (Colorado School of Mines), Caleb Pyle (Maryville University), Grant Redmond (Colorado School of Mines), Lois Scomparin (Colorado School of Mines), Swadley, Ryan Szklany (Embry-Riddle [Fla.]) and Justin Thompson (Colorado Mesa University). Szklany is a four-time Academic All-America® selection for the Eagles as he was named to the first team a year ago and to the third team in 2020-21 and 2019-20.
 
The Division II team boasted a 3.90 average GPA with the first team checking in at 3.93.
 
The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2022-23 Division II Academic All-America® program.

Matthew Kearney, an electrical engineering, computer science and philosophy major with a perfect 4.00 GPA, finished off his career at MIT in grand fashion, aiding in the Engineers’ first-ever NCAA Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship title. He was one of nine Engineers to earn USTFCCCA All-America honors, finishing in eighth place in the men’s 10,000 meters with a time of 29:20.76. He is also a five-time USTFCCCA All-Region honoree (Indoor: 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters; Outdoor: 3,000 meters, 5,000 meters and the steeplechase).
 
The native of Austin, Texas, was a part of two conference championship teams during his final season at MIT. He helped the Engineers capture their 20th New England Division III Indoor Championship with a sixth-place finish in the 5,000 meters (14:01.76) before MIT finished as the runner-up at the NCAA Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championship. A third-place podium finish by Kearney in the 10,000 meters helped MIT claim its 21st 2023 NEWMAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

Division III led the four Academic All-America® teams with a 3.91 average GPA with the first team boasting a 3.97.

Zach Bennetts holds a 3.93 GPA with a triple major in biology, chemistry and exercise science. The native of Denton, Nebraska, finished his career at Concordia University as a two-time All-American on the track, earning the distinction at the 2021 (fifth place) and 2023 (seventh place) NAIA Indoor Track National Championships in the pole vault.
 
Bennetts is a four-time NAIA national qualifier and claimed the Great Plains Athletic Conference pole vault title three times during his standout career. He earned six career All-GPAC awards and is a three-time NAIA Scholar-Athlete honoree.
 
The final two repeat selections come from the NAIA: Bennetts and Jordan Crawford (Missouri Baptist University).
 
The NAIA team boasted a 3.84 average GPA with the first team checking in at 3.88.
