AUSTIN, Texas – Four standouts headline a group of outstanding student-athletes named to the 2023 Academic All-America® baseball teams as selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC).
 
Jake Gelof from the University of Virginia, Alex Epp from William Jewell College, Tyler Horvat of Washington & Jefferson College, and Eric Maffie from University of St. Francis (Ill.) are the All-America ® of the Year honorees for NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III, and the NAIA, respectively.

Jake Gelof, from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, mans third base for Virginia. The junior is a media studies major with a 3.54 cumulative grade-point average. A first team Academic All-America® selection in 2022 for the Cavaliers, he earns the honor again in 2023.
 
Recently named a 2023 All-American by Collegiate Baseball, Gelof has already become Virginia’s career leader in home runs and leads the Cavaliers this season in round trippers with 22. A semifinalist for this year’s Golden Spikes Award for the top collegiate baseball player, Gelof has broken his own UVA single-season record for RBI this year.
 
Seven members of this year’s Academic All-America® Division I baseball team are earning a recognition for at least the second time, including one honoree that was a Division II selection in 2022. Jonathan Fincher of Louisiana Tech is the lone member of this year’s Academic All-America® Division I baseball team to earn the recognition for a third time. He has third team honors this year and also in 2021, to go with second team recognition in 2022. Joining Gelof as two-time Division I honorees on this year’s squad are: John Bakke (Morehead State University), Ryan Galanie (Wofford College), Kyle Gurney (Bowling Green State University), and Jacob McKeon (Washington State University). Outfielder Nick Brassington from Queens University of Charlotte is a third team selection on this year’s Division I squad after earning a Third Team selection to the Division II team in 2022.
 
The 35-man team had a 3.80 average GPA with the first team checking in at 3.83. Five of the 10 student-athletes with perfect 4.0 cumulative GPAs this year are first team honorees.

NCAA Division II

Alex Epp is a senior civil engineering major from Wichita, Kansas, and is a repeat first team selection. He holds a 3.91 cumulative GPA.
 
Epp, a shortstop for William Jewell, was recently named a second team All-American by the NCAA Division II Conference Commissioners Association. He broke his own school single-season record for batting average with a mark of .435 at the plate this season. He led the team with 16 doubles, eight home runs and 49 RBI. He also broke the single-season record with 48 walks while having 21 multi-hit games. Epp earned First Team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors along with all-region accolades from D2CCA, ABCA and the NCBWA.
 
Epp is one of six repeat selections from the 2022 Academic All-America® Division II baseball team. He is joined by these returning selections: Corey Avant (Wingate University), Lewis Beals (Hillsdale College), Harrison Rodgers (Colorado Mesa University), Cody Smith (Harding University), and Greyson Stevens (Henderson State University).
 
The Division II team boasts a 3.81 average GPA with a 3.89 average for the first team. Seven of the 36 Division II selections have a cumulative 4.0 grade point average.
 
The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2022-23 Division II Academic All-America® program.

NCAA Division III

Tyler Horvat hails from Irwin, Pennsylvania. A finance major at Washington & Jefferson, he has a 3.99 cumulative GPA. He is a pitcher and outfielder for the Presidents, earning five All-America awards in his career, including selection this season by both the American Baseball Coaches Association and D3baseball.com as a utility player.
 
He was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Pitcher and Player of the Year. On the mound this year, Horvat posted an 11-3 record, with career-highs of 82 strikeouts and 93-1/3 innings. He compiled a 29-4 career record to establish a new school record with 29 career wins. He patrolled centerfield for W&J when he wasn’t on the mound. Horvat hit .387 this year, scoring 54 runs from the leadoff spot. He set a school single-season record with 30 stolen bases this year, and his 62 career steals are also a school record.  
 
Horvat is one of two members of the Division III team earning their third career selection to the Division III Academic All-America® Team. He earned first team honors this year and in 2022 to go with second team recognition in 2021. Luke Werkmeister-Martin (Willamette) is a three-time honoree with third team honors this year and in 2021 to go with second team accolades in 2022. The duo is part of a group of 10 selections on this year’s squad that were also on the 2022 Academic All-America® Division III baseball team. They are joined by: Carter Ballstadt (Piedmont University), Pearce Bucher (Shenandoah University), Cormac Madigan (Ripon College), Evan Sante (Washington & Jefferson), Justin Sartori (Aurora University), Teddy Schoenfeld (MIT), Luke Vonderhaar (Baldwin Wallace University), and Ricky Voss (New Jersey City University).
 
The Division III team boasts an overall average GPA of 3.846 with a 3.92 average for the first team. Nine student-athletes boast 4.0 GPAs.

Eric Maffie, from Coal Valley, Illinois, is currently a graduate student majoring in business administration with a 4.00 cumulative GPA. He earned his undergraduate degree from St. Francis (Ill.) in marketing with a 3.89 GPA.
 
Maffie was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year this spring, winning the award for the second-consecutive season. The outfielder helped lead the Fighting Saints to the NAIA National Tournament with team highs of 20 home runs, 24 doubles, 62 RBI, 58 runs scored, and a .383 batting average.
 
Maffie is a first team honoree on the NAIA Academic All-America® baseball team for the second-consecutive year. Nick Olsen (Lawrence Tech), a second team honoree this year, is the other repeat selection joining Maffie following second team recognition in 2022.
 
The 22-man NAIA team has a 3.89 average GPA with the first team checking in at 3.93.
 
The NAIA Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NAIA national governance structure to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2022-23 NAIA Academic All-America® program.
