AUSTIN, Texas – Four standouts headline a group of outstanding student-athletes named to the 2024 Academic All-America® men’s soccer teams as selected by College Sports Communicators.
 
Marcus Caldeira from West Virginia University, Preston Neal from Southern New Hampshire University, Nathan Donovan from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and Ricardo Rittersberger of Aquinas College lead the Academic All-America® teams by being named as the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for NCAA Divisions I, II, and III as well as the NAIA, respectively.
 

NCAA Division I

Marcus Caldeira, a junior majoring in finance, owns a cumulative grade-point average of 4.00. The forward from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada led West Virginia to a 13-2-7 record in 2024. He finished as the second-leading scorer with 11 goals and an assist for 23 points with four game-winning goals. He is tied for 22nd in the country in goals. The Mountaineers were the Sun Belt regular season and tournament champions. Ranked 10th in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25, they advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 2-1 victory over North Florida before dropping a 2-1 decision to No. 11 Virginia. Caldeira was a second team All-Sun Belt Conference selection.
 
Caldeira is one of two repeat performers from the 2023 CSC Academic All-America® Team. He earned first team honors and was also a College Soccer News First-Team All-American, a United Soccer Coaches Second-Team All-American, a United Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region First Team selection and was named to the All-Sun Belt First Team. He led the Sun Belt Conference and finished 16th in Division I with 12 goals and 25th in points (27).
 
In addition to Caldeira Brendan Herb of UNC Asheville was also a first team honoree on the 2023 Academic All-America® Division I team.
 
The 11 members of the Division I first team had a 3.91 average GPA. A total of nine members had 4.00 GPAs, with six on the first team.

NCAA Division II

Preston Neal, a senior goalkeeper from Windham, New Hampshire, has a 3.98 cumulative GPA as a graphic design & media arts major. He becomes a two-time  CSC Academic All-American after earning third team honors a year ago and was a three-time All-District honoree. He was previously a United Soccer Coaches East All-Region first team pick, the Northeast 10 Goalkeeper of the Year and NE10 All-Conference First Team selection this season.
 
Neal started 17 of the 18 matches he played in, finishing 13-1-3 with eight shutouts. He had a 0.75 goals-against average and .819 save percentage, ranking second in the NE10 in GAA, save percentage and shutouts. He is 10th, 11th and 13th, nationally, in those respective categories.
The Penmen finished with a 14-2-3 record, capturing their eighth NE10 title. Southern New Hampshire received its 24th NCAA Championship berth and the No. 2 seed in Super Region I. They tied Post 1-1 in the second round, but were eliminated 7-6 on penalty kicks.
 
Including Neal, Division II had six repeat selections on the Academic All-America® team: Johannes Hanken Tjostheim (Mercy University), also a first team selection a year ago, and Arturo Gorodnickis (Lewis University), who moves up from the third team. In addition, Sebastian Doppelhofer (Lewis University) and Trindon Turner (Rogers State University) are third team members after earning a spot on the second team a year ago, and Gannon University’s James Pool repeats as a third team selection.
 
The Division II first team had a 3.92 average GPA. Eleven total members have 4.00 GPAs, with five of those on the first team.
 
The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2024-25 Division II Academic All-America® program.

NCAA Division III

Nathan Donovan, a senior forward from Hazel Green, Wisconsin, is now an All-American on the pitch and in the classroom. He was recently named an United Soccer Coaches first team All-American and is now a first team Academic All-American. He is a biology major with a 3.88 GPA. 
 
Donovan is Wisconsin-Eau Claire's first two-time All-American in men's soccer after he earnedfirst team All-America® accolades as a sophomore in 2022 and repeating this year. He leads all of NCAA men's college soccer — regardless of Division — in scoring with 26 goals this fall. He also had a team-high 15 assists for a total of 67 points. His goal and points totals both set new UW-Eau Claire single-season records. He was the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Kwik Trip Offensive Player of the Year this season and earned all-region honors all four years of his career.
 
The Blugolds enjoyed the best men's soccer season in program history, reaching the Division III elite eight before suffering a 2-1 defeat to Amherst College to finish at 17-2-5. Donovan finished his career as UW-Eau Claire's all-time leader in nearly every statistical category. He ranks third in the history of Division III with 229 career points and ranks fourth in DIII history with 94 goals.
 
Nine members of the Division III team were repeat Academic All-America® selections, including Logan Falzarano of Johns Hopkins University, last year’s CSC Division III Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year and now a two-time first team selection along with earning third team honors in 2021. In addition, Will Shaffer of Ohio Northern University, Tiago Frazao of Endicott College, Shea Bechtel of St. Olaf College, Adam Carter of Messiah University, Curtis Hale of Colorado College, Koa Kaliebe of Franklin & Marshall University, Cole Dobson of Pacific Lutheran University, and Hans Haenicke of Macalester College were repeat honorees.
 
The Division III first team had an average 3.92 GPA, with three members having 4.00 GPAs. A total of six student-athletes on the three teams had 4.00 GPAs.

NAIA

Ricardo Rittersberger, a senior forward from Weinheim, Germany, has a 3.76 GPA as a business & sports management major. He is now a two-time first team selection to the Academic All-America® team. He led Aquinas to a 14-5-1 record, reaching the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship before suffering a 2-1 loss in overtime to Indiana Tech.
 
Rittersberger led the Saints with 18 goals and four assists for 40 points. He had nine game-winning goals. He ranks among the NAIA leaders in both goals and points. He finishes his career with 48 goals and 18 assists for 118 career points. He finishes second in career goals and third in career points at Aquinas.
 
Four players are repeat selections to the Academic All-America® team from the NAIA: Rittersberger, Simen Haraldstad (Milligan University), Andrew Pasang (Oregon Tech), and Guido Cacciabue (St. Thomas (Fla.) University). Cacciabue was the 2023 CSC NAIA Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year
 
The NAIA first team had a 3.90 average GPA, with three members of the first team and six total showing 4.00 GPAs.
