AUSTIN, Texas – Four standouts headline a group of outstanding student-athletes named to the 2023-24 Academic All-America® men’s basketball teams as selected by College Sports Communicators.
 
Guard Max Abmas from the University of Texas, guard Erik Timko of Thomas Jefferson University, guard Cael Schmitt of Coe College, and guard Jonathan Brown of the University of the Cumberlands lead the Academic All-America® teams by being named as the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for NCAA Divisions I, II and III, as well as the NAIA, respectively.
 

NCAA Division I

Texas’ Max Abmas finished his career as the NCAA’s active career scoring leader and No. 8 all-time in NCAA history with 3,132 points. An All-Big 12 first-team selection, Abmas converted 42.5 percent (194-of-456) from the floor during the season, including 36.2 percent (92-of-254) from three-point range and 90.0 percent (90-of-100) from the free throw line.
 
A career that included four seasons at Oral Roberts, Abmas finishes his time on the court with 157 career games played, 3,132 points, 536 assists, 514 rebounds and 171 steals. He is the third player in NCAA Division I men's history to record both 3,000 points and 500 assists. After earning a bachelor's degree in mathematics at Oral Roberts with a 3.81 GPA, the native of Rockwall, Texas, holds a perfect 4.00 GPA in his master’s degree program at Texas in strategic communications.
 
Three members of the Academic All-America® Division I men’s basketball teams boast a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in their graduate degrees. The 15-member class holds an average undergraduate GPA of 3.78, while nine members hold an average graduate GPA of 3.82.
 
Three student-athletes are repeat selections on the Academic All-America® Division I men’s basketball teams: Brandon Angel (Stanford University); Marcus Domask (University of Illinois); Michael Jones (Stanford University).

NCAA Division II

Thomas Jefferson’s Erik Timko earned his second-straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Year award after leading his team in scoring (19.6 points per game), free throw percentage (88.0 percent) and minutes-per-game (36.1). The Audubon, Pennsylvania, native led the Rams to their first CACC Championship title since 2019-20 and was named to the All-CACC Tournament Team.
 
A three-time Division II Conference Commissioners Association All-East Region selection, Timko ranks No. 20 in the country in points scored (628) and No. 17 in three-point shooting percentage (43.7). The junior holds a 3.91 GPA as a business management major after leading the Rams back to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
 
Six members of the Academic All-America® Division II men’s basketball teams boast a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in either their undergraduate or graduate degree programs. The 16-member class holds an average undergraduate GPA of 3.86, while six members hold an average graduate GPA of 3.93.
 
Two other student-athletes join Timko as repeat selections on the Academic All-America® Division II men’s basketball teams Jacob Beeninga (Minnesota State University Moorhead); Ben Gahlert (Lynn University).

NCAA Division III

Being named the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year at the NCAA Division III level adds another top honor to Coe College’s Cael Schmitt’s standout 2023-24 season. The guard was one of the top defensive players in the country during the year, ranking No. 18 in the country in steals (66) and No. 42 in steals per game (2.36). He was named the 2024 A-R-C Defensive Player of the Year and was a first-team all-conference performance for the fourth time in his career.
 
The native of Dubuque, Iowa, was also named to the NABC All-District second team and selected to the D3hoops.com all-region team after averaging 17.6 points per game and shooting 43.8 percent from the field (179-of-409). The senior currently holds a perfect 4.00 GPA as a computer science and business administration major.
 
Four members of the Academic All-America® Division III men’s basketball teams boast a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in either their undergraduate or graduate degree programs. The 16-member class holds an average undergraduate GPA of 3.886, while four members hold an average graduate GPA of 3.89.
 
Six other student-athletes join Schmitt as repeat selections on the Academic All-America® Division III men’s basketball teams: Jonathan Adams (Worcester Polytechnic Institute); Josh Angle (Claremont-Mudd-Scripps); Tate Ivanyo (Anderson University); Ryan Thissen (Saint John’s University [Minn.]); Caleb Williams (Macalester College); Jonathan Zapinski (Elmhurst University).

NAIA

After leading his team to a NAIA Final Site Round of 16 showing, the University of the Cumberland’s Jonathan Brown earned NAIA first-team All-American honors, a first for a Patriot since 2009. Playing the 2023-24 season in honor of his late mother, Brown finished this final collegiate campaign averaging 14.6 points per game, 4.2 rebounds per game, shooting 49.8 percent from the field (137-of-275) and 37.3 percent from three-point range (38-of-102).
 
A native of London, England, Brown led Cumberlands to a share of the Mid-South Conference regular season title and he was named the MSC Player of the Year. A two-time NAIA All-American, earning his first at Central Methodist, Brown posted a perfect 4.0 GPA as an undergraduate and holds the same 4.00 GPA as a graduate student with a degree in business administration.
 
Five members of the Academic All-America® NAIA men’s basketball teams boast a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in either their undergraduate or graduate degree programs. The 10-member class holds an average undergraduate GPA of 3.88, while all four of the graduate students hold a perfect 4.0 GPA.
 
Two student-athletes are repeat selections on the Academic All-America® NAIA men’s basketball teams: Cory Ainsworth (Cornerstone University); Drew Wyman (College of Idaho).
