AUSTIN, Texas – Five standouts headline a group of accomplished student-athletes named to the 2023-24 Academic All-America® men’s at-large teams as selected by College Sports Communicators.
 
Mark Berlaga from Stanford University, Sam Tandy from Harding University, Lorenzo Mencaccini of VTSU Castleton, Aric Williams from Dakota Wesleyan University, and Andrew Zielinski of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College are the All-America® of the Year honorees for NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA and College Division, respectively.
 

NCAA Division I

Mark Berlaga, a junior men’s gymnast from Palo Alto, California, had a 4.00 cumulative grade-point average as a biology major.
 
Berlaga has helped the Cardinal to three NCAA team championships in men’s gymnastics. Stanford had won 10 NCAA titles, including the past five in a row. Berlaga was named an NCAA All-American in still rings in 2022 and was named an individual champion in the still rings at the 2023 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship, which the Cardinal has won the past three team championships. Berlaga, who was named to the 2023 All-MPSF team on still rings, has been named a MPSF All-Academic Scholar-Athlete, a CGA All-America Scholar-Athlete and to the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll.
 
Eight members of this year’s Academic All-America® Division I men’s at-large team are earning a recognition for the second time: Aaron Bohlinger (University of Massachusetts), Tyler Bradbury (University of Utah), Sam Brennan (United States Air Force Academy), Ethan Champlin (UCLA), Remi Drolet (Harvard University), Ryggs Johnston (Arizona State University), Keegan O’Toole (University of Missouri), and Caleb VanArragon (Valparaiso University).
 
The Division I Academic All-America® first team maintained a 3.87 cumulative grade-point average. Twelve student-athletes had a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA.

NCAA Division II

Sam Tandy, a senior golfer from Fayetteville, Arkansas, had a 3.98 GPA as a finance major.
 
Tandy was named the 2023-24 Great American Conference Male Scholar Athlete of Year. Tandy was the fifth consecutive Bison student-athlete to be named the GAC Male Scholar Athlete recipient. He also became the first golfer recognized as the league's Male Scholar Athlete of the Year.

This season, he became the lone Division II golfer named as a finalist for the Byron Nelson Award - an award given out to the outstanding Division I, II, III, or NAIA scholar-athlete of the year. He earned his third Cobalt Golf All-America Scholar honor. He claimed the NCAA Elite 90 award and earned First Team Academic All-America honors in 2023.

On the course, he won GAC Player of the Year, led the Bisons to the national championships for the second straight season, finishing 10th in the individual competition. Tandy became a PING All-American the second straight year after placing on the first team, won the NCAA Fall Central Region Preview and registered 11 top-10 finishes in 12 tournaments.
 
Tandy is one of 12 repeat selections from the 2022-23 Academic All-America® Division II men’s at-large team. He is joined by these returning selections from 2022-23: Dylan Checketts (Colorado Mesa University), Eric George (Chowan University), Linus Jonsson (Lander University), Ty McGeary (West Liberty University), Carl Miltun and Jeppe Thybo (Missouri University of Science & Technology), Leon Nikic (University of Alaska Anchorage), Garrett Rivers (Maryville University), Simen Strand and Sebastian Simonson (Saint Michael’s College), and Gerry York (University of Montevallo). Checketts and Strand were named to the Academic All-America® squad for the third consecutive season.
 
The Division II Academic All-America® first team collected a 3.86 average GPA. Eleven of the Division II selections had a cumulative 4.0 grade point average.
 
The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2023-24 Division II Academic All-America® program.

NCAA Division III

Lorenzo Mencaccini, a senior alpine skier from Bologna, Italy, has a 4.00 cumulative GPA as a management major.
 
Mencaccino had a season for the record books, sweeping nationals to become the fifth individual national champion in program history. Mencaccini finished his senior season with six United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association race wins and five runner-up placements.
 
The Castleton men's alpine skiing program elevated to new heights in 2024, repeating as overall USCSA national champions with titles in both giant slalom and slalom. The team amassed 12 team victories – eight of the 10 MacConnell Division competitions – and 11 individual race-winners.
 
The 2024 Division III team had nine honorees that are repeat honorees from last year, including Mencaccini. The members of this year’s team that were also on the 2022-23 squad are: Spencer Amacher (Ohio Wesleyan University), Trevor Bollinger (SUNY Geneseo), Quinn Clifford (Illinois Wesleyan University), Gage Linahon (Central College), Patrick McGraw (John Carroll University), Charlie Stuhl (Augsburg University), Cooper Swift (Hobart College) and Alan Zheng Johns Hopkins University)
 
The Division III Academic All-America® first team boasted an overall average GPA of 3.97. Ten student-athletes had a 4.0 cumulative GPA.

NAIA

Aric Williams, a graduate student wrestler from Pierre, South Dakota, had a 4.00 cumulative GPA as a business administration major.
 
Williams, who transferred from South Dakota State University, was named an NAIA All-America after finishing in eighth place in the 141-pound weight class at the NAIA National Championship. Williams, who posted a 14-8 record, went into the national championship unranked and recorded three major upsets over three wrestlers ranked in the top 15. He was also named an honorable mention selection to the All-Great Plains Athletic Conference team.
 
The NAIA Academic All-America® first team had an average GPA of 3.88. Four student-athletes boasted a 4.0 cumulative GPA.

Andrew Zielinski, a sophomore men’s golfer from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, had a 3.92 cumulative GPA as a nursing major. Zielinski, who will continue his athletics career at Lee University this fall, helped the Bulldogs win the 2024 NJCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship. It was the second national team title in program history.

Zielinski recorded five top-five finishes for the Bulldogs this season as MGCCC won 12 consecutive won tournament team title. He was named to the PING All-America first team this season as he recorded a 72.57 stroke average, which is the ninth-best in school history.

The College Division Academic All-America® first team had an average GPA of 3.87. Nine student-athletes posted a 4.0 cumulative GPA.
