AUSTIN, Texas – Five standouts headline a group of outstanding student-athletes named to the 2025 Academic All-America® at-large teams selected by College Sports Communicators.
 
Gymnast Mark Berlaga from Stanford University, wrestler Ty McGeary from West Liberty University, outside hitter Christian Sheaffer from Southern Virginia University, opposite hitter/setter Matt Pennala from Saint Xavier University and thrower Kaden Banks from Indian Hills Community College-Ottumwa were named as the Academic All-America® Team Members of the Year for NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and college division, respectively.
 

NCAA Division I

Now a back-to-back CSC Men’s Division I At-Large Team Member of the Year, Mark Berlaga ended his career as a three-time NCAA All-American as a still rings specialist, finishing as the national runner-up in the event in both 2022 and 2024. He is also an MPSF Champion in the event, scoring a 14.600 to win the conference title in 2023. Berlaga, who had a 4.00 cumulative grade-point average as a human biology major, helped guide Stanford to three national championships and three MPSF team titles. The Palo Alto, California, native is a two-time Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll selection, a three-time MPSF All-Academic Team honoree and recently earned an NCAA postgraduate scholarship.
 
Seven members of the Academic All-America® Division I at-large teams have a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in their undergraduate or graduate work. The 15 members on the first team have an average GPA of 3.88, with all three teams holding a collective average GPA of 3.81.

NCAA Division II

A three-time NCAA Division II national champion at 184 pounds, Ty McGeary capped his final season with a 33-1 record to finish his career 132-7 overall. Over his last two seasons, the McDonald, Pennsylvania, native totaled 66-1 record. The back-to-back Mountain East Conference Male Athlete of the Year made history as the first wrestler in West Liberty and MEC history to win four consecutive conference titles. McGeary, who is has a 3.69 GPA while working on his master’s degree in business administration, is a three-time Academic All-American and a four-time NWCA Scholar All-American.
 
Six members of the Academic All-America® Division II at-large teams boast a perfect 4.0 GPA in their undergraduate or graduate work. The 17 members on the first team have an average GPA of 3.78, with the entire 45-man team holding a collective average GPA of 3.81.

NCAA Division III

A three-time first team All-American and the 2025 AVCA Division III Player of the Year, Christian Sheaffer boasted a .421 attacking percentage with a career-high 444 kills alongside 149 digs, 97.0 blocks and 70 service aces this season. He led Southern Virginia to its first men’s volleyball national championship as the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player and became the Knights’ all-time ace leader with 177 in his career. Sheaffer has a 3.87 GOA as a business major.
 
Aurora University’s Braeden Duncan, who was named to the Academic All-America® first team with a 4.00 GPA as a pre-physical therapy major, earned the NCAA Elite 90 Award for Division III men’s golf for the third consecutive season in 2024-25. Duncan also earned an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
 
Fifteen honorees on the Academic All-America® Division III at-large teams boast a perfect 4.0 GPA in their undergraduate work or graduate school. The 15-man first team has an average GPA of 3.94, with the entire 46-man team combining for a collective 3.88 GPA.

The 2025 NAIA Player of the Year and an AVCA first team All-American, Matt Pennala led Saint Xavier to the national championship match and a runner-up performance as the team’s leading attacker. The Long Beach, California, native hit .364 with 395 kills and 447.5 points – both program single-season records. He added 131 assists, 42 service aces, 143 digs and 71.0 blocks in his senior season. Pennala has a 4.00 GPA as a communications major.
 
Three members of the 20-man Academic All-America® NAIA at-large teams – Pennala, Creighton Baughman (Concordia University, Nebraska) and Daniil Goshkov (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University) - boast a perfect 4.0 GPA in their undergraduate or graduate work. The NAIA honorees combined for a 3.82 GPA.

Banks earned a pair of All-America honors at the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, finishing third in the shot put with a mark of 16.92 meters and fifth in the discus with a toss of 54.54 meters. The Onalaska, Wisconsin, native helped his team to a fourth place finish at both the indoor and outdoor national meets and broke the school records in the discus (55.94 meters) during his sophomore season. Banks had a 4.00 GPA while earning his associate’s degree.
 
Banks and three other members of the 20-man Academic All-America® college division at-large teams – Cole Huebner (Indian Hills Community College-Ottumwa), Daillon Kryzanowski (Southwest Mississippi Community College) and David Ruiz Ospina (Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College) - boast a perfect 4.0 GPA. The college division honorees combined for a 3.82 GPA.
