TOWSON, Md. – Senior forward Harrison Shipp of the University of Notre Dame and graduate student Frances Silva of West Virginia University lead the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I men’s and women’s soccer teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Shipp and Silva have been chosen as the winners of the Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year award for the Division I men’s and
women’s soccer teams, respectively.
A finance major with a 3.88 G.P.A., Shipp (right) was named as the Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year in Division I men’s soccer after leading the No. 3 Fighting Irish (13-1-6) into the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Cup Round of 16 against Wake Forest on Sunday, Dec. 1.
A native of Lake Forest, Ill., Shipp ranks 12th in the nation in total points (30), while leading his team in goals (11) and assists (8). A senior captain who has never missed a game in his career, he was the Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year after pacing the Irish to a share of the ACC regular-season title in the program’s first year in the ACC.
A Capital One Academic All-America® men’s soccer second team selection in 2012, Shipp is enrolled in Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business and has been a member of the Dean’s List each of the last five semesters.
A broadcast journalism and sport management major with a 3.97 G.P.A., Silva is making her first appearance on the Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division I women’s soccer first team. She guided West Virginia to the Big 12 championship and a 16-4-3 record. The Mountaineers reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Big 12 scoring leader, Silva scored 15 goals and set a school record with 13 assists in 2013. She was named as the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year in 2013 and earned first team All-Big 12 honors.
A native of Overland Park, Kan., Silva was an All-Big 12 first team selection in 2012 and an All-Big East second team honoree in 2011. In 2010, she was the Big East Rookie of the Year in 2010.
As a junior, she earned Scholar All-East Region Third Team and Academic All-Big 12 Team honors. She finished her career with 38 goals and 98 points, fourth on West Virginia’s career list.
2013 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Men's Soccer Team
Six members of the Capital One Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer Division I first team earned Capital One Academic All-America® honors last season. Four student-athletes are repeat first-team selections.
Senior defender Nick Alers of Yale and senior forward Tyler Riggs of Kentucky are three-time Capital One Academic All-America® honorees, both earning third-team honors in 2011 as well as first-team recognition in 2012.
Senior defender Joe Sofia of UCLA was also a first team honoree in 2012, while senior defender Nick Marshall of Drake and Shipp were both second team selections in 2012. Senior defender Joe Meyer of Bucknell garnered a third team nod last year.
The Capital One Academic All-America® men’s soccer Division I first team defenders include senior Joe Meyer of Bucknell and junior goalkeeper Charlie Lyon of Marquette join Alers, Marshall and Sofia.
Midfielders junior Laurie Bell of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, graduate student Thomas McNamara of Clemson and senior Todd Vervynckt of Valparaiso are all first-team honorees.
Senior forward Andy Bevin of West Virginia joins Riggs and Shipp as the first team forwards.
The Capital One Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer Division I first team had an average G.P.A. of 3.77, highlighted by Marshall’s 4.0 G.P.A.
A biomedical sciences major with a 3.86 G.P.A., Lyon has led Marquette to a Big East title, a 13-5-2 record, and a No. 11 national ranking. While leading the Golden Eagles to a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16 against Virginia, Lyon has played every minute in goal. He has registered 10 shutouts with 71 saves, a 0.81 goals against average and .807 saves percentage. Lyon led Marquette to a 1-0 overtime win over Akron in the NCAA Tournament.
An economics major with a 3.98 G.P.A., Alers, a repeat selection on the Capital One Academic All-America® men’s soccer Division I first team, is also was a Senior CLASS Award candidate. The San Jose, Costa Rica native is a four-time All-Ivy league honoree, earning first-team honors as a junior and senior. A starter in all 17 games as a senior, Alers is active in the community, serving as a mentor and tutor at New Haven's St. Martin de Porres Academy in an after-school program teaching soccer skills in a weekly clinic to underprivileged kids.
A native of Glen Carbon, Ill., Marshall has a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. with a double major in computer science and chemistry. A second-team Capital One Academic All-America® men’s soccer selection in 2012, he is a team captain that helped the Bulldogs post five shutouts on the season, including four in a row. Marshall scored four goals with two assists while leading Drake to an 8-8-4 record and a berth in the Missouri Valley Conference semi-finals.
A mechanical engineering major, Meyer has a 3.93 G.P.A. at Bucknell. He was awarded a Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) scholarship, while also helping the Bison post a 13-6-1 record as a senior. A third team Capital One Academic All-America® men’s soccer Division I honoree last year, the Sykesville, Md., native has scored a goal with two assists this season. He is also a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society and the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society.
A native of Dove Canyon, Cal., Sofia has a 3.96 G.P.A. majoring in communications studies at UCLA and is a repeat Capital One Academic All-America® men’s soccer Division I first team member. A three-time first team Academic All-Pac-12 honoree, the senior captain has played the most minutes of any of his Bruin teammates and has anchored a defense that has recorded six shutouts. The top-ranked team in the nation, UCLA (11-3-4) is the No. 1-seeded team in the NCAA Tournament.
Bell is an English and journalism major at Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a 3.72 G.P.A. The Poynton, England native led the Panthers to the Horizon League Tournament championship and an NCAA Tournament bid. Named as the Horizon League Player of the Year, Bell led the Horizon League and was eighth in the nation in goals (13). He also led the league with 30 points while helping the Panthers allow only 0.63 goals per game.
A graduate student with a 3.40 G.P.A. in applied economics, McNamara graduated with a degree in economics from Brown. The native of West Nyack, N.Y., he led Clemson in scoring with seven goals and eight assists for 22 points. He also became the first Tiger soccer player in seven years to be named first team All-Atlantic Coast Conference. He scored four game-winning goals this season while leading the Tigers (11-7-3) to the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
A native of Plymouth, Indiana, Vervynckt has maintained a 3.98 G.P.A. in mechanical engineering while starting in 15 games for Valparaiso. He scored two goals and two assists in 2013, while taking 25 shots. Last year, he earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-America® men’s soccer third team.
Bevin has a 3.88 G.P.A. in business administration at West Virginia and was named first team All-Mid-America Conference. A member of the Garrett Forward Academic Honor Roll, the Dean’s List and President’s List, the Napier, New Zealand native led the MAC in points (24) and goals (9). He guided WVU to a 7-7-5 record.
A three-time member of the Capital One Academic All-America® men’s soccer Division I team, Riggs led Kentucky to a 7-9-3 record. A first team Academic All-America® selection for the second year in a row, he is a mechanical engineering major with a 3.93 G.P.A. A member of the Senior CLASS Award watch list, he is one of the most prolific goal scorers in school history and is the first player in the history of the program to lead the team in scoring all four years. He scored six goals in 2013.
2013 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Women's Soccer Team
Five members of the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA I women’s soccer team have a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. and 10 of the members have greater than a 3.85 G.P.A. The 11 first team honorees have an average G.P.A. of 3.93.
Defender Caitlin Ball of North Carolina is the only junior on the women’s first team while senior midfielders Becca Hemby of High Point and Kate Reigle of Marquette and senior defender Elizabeth Tucker of Notre Dame are two-time selections. Tucker was a first team choice for the second year in a row.
Hemby was a Capital One Academic All-America® second team pick in 2012 while Reigle was a third team selection.
Seniors Brie Buschman of Abilene Christian, Hayley Haagsma of Texas Tech, Tucker and Ball make up the defensive first team unit. They are backed up by senior Elizabeth Hoerner of the U.S. Naval Academy at goalkeeper.
The Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA I first team midfield includes seniors Rachel Conway of Radford, Hemby and Reigle.
Joining Academic All-America® of the Year Silva as forwards are seniors Jessacca Gironda of Kent State and Kristen Hamilton of Denver.
An oceanography major with a 3.86 G.P.A., Hoerner was the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year the last two seasons. A native of Lititz, Pa., she led Navy to a 16-5 record and a runner-up finish in the Patriot League. She was named the Patriot League Women’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year twice and she posted a 0.53 goals against average that included nine shutouts and a .853 save percentage.
A three-year starter at North Carolina, Ball is a journalism and political science major with a 3.88 G.P.A. The Chapel Hill, N.C., native was the winner of the NCAA Elite 89 Award as part of the 2012 NCAA championship team. She has led top-ranked UNC to a 20-4 record and a berth in the NCAA quarter-finals against UCLA.
A member of the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® Division II third team at Abilene Christian, Buschman is a communication major with a 3.96 G.P.A. The Amarillo, Texas native earned second team All-Southland Conference honors in ACU’s first year as a member of NCAA Division I. A two-time all-Lone Star Conference selection, she led ACU to a 13-5-1 record in 2013.
A human development and family studies major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Haagsma led Texas Tech to an 18-2-2 record and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Cerritos, Cal., native is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 selection and earned second team All-Big 12 honors this year. She scored four goals and three assists for a defense that allowed only nine goals all season.
An accounting major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A., Tucker is a 2013 Rhodes Scholarship candidate at Notre Dame. The defender has earned All-Big East and All-Big East Tournament Team honors in her career. She led Notre Dame to a 13-8-1 record and a spot in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. She had four goals and three assists in 2013 and scored 19 goals with 14 assists in her career.
An exercise, sport and health education major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Conway led Radford to a 15-3-2 record and a runner-up spot in the Big South Conference. A midfielder from Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, she was a two-time All-Big South pick and was named to the Big South All-Academic team in 2013. She had four goals and four assists for Radford. The program's first Academic All-America® selection, Conway helped Radford win three Big South regular season and two tournament titles with an overall record of 56-19-7.
A mathematical sciences major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Hemby was a three-time all-Big South midfielder at High Point. The Frederick, Md., native is a two-time Capital One Academic All-America® selection and was the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2013. She led High Point to a 9-10-1 record with three goals and five assists and she finished her career with 21 goals and 13 assists.
A biomedical science major with a 4.00 G.P.A., Reigle led Marquette to four Big East championships and four appearances in the NCAA Tournament in her career. A third team Academic All-America® honoree, she had two assists as a senior and finished her career with 11 goals and 14 assists. The team finished the season with an 18-3 record.
A business management major with a 3.88 G.P.A., Gironda led Kent State to a 12-7-1 record. The Akron, Ohio native led the Mid-American Conference with 14 goals and earned first team all-conference honors. She finished her career as Kent State’s all-time leader with goals (31) and points (78).
A three-time conference player of the year, Hamilton is a marketing major with a 3.70 G.P.A. at Denver. The Littleton, Col., native was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year in 2011, the 2012 Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year and the 2013 Summit League Offensive Player of the Year in 2013. A two-time All-American, she led Denver to an 18-2-1 record, the Summit League championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament in 2013. Named as the Most Valuable Player of the Summit League Tournament, Hamilton scored 14 goals and 12 assists as a senior and finished her career as the Pioneers’ all-time scoring leader with 51 goals and 36 assists .
