AUSTIN, Texas – Junior men’s lacrosse player Charlie Bertrand of Merrimack College has been named as the 2018-19 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for Division II, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The Division II Google Cloud Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2018-19 Division II Academic All-America® teams program. This is the eighth year that CoSIDA has named Division II Academic All-America® teams.

Bertrand is the eighth student-athlete to earn the Division II Google Cloud Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year and the first men’s lacrosse student-athlete to earn the award. Western State University Colorado’s Alicja Konieczek received the award last year, while Saint Leo University’s women's golfer Marie Coors received the award in 2016-17. Ferris State University quarterback Jason Vander Laan won the award in 2015-16, while Clarion University diver Kristin Day captured the award in 2014-15. Women’s basketball player Lauren Battista (Bentley University) collected the honor in 2013-14. Women’s basketball player Kari Daugherty (Ashland University) earned the award in 2012-13 while Bryan Lippincott of the Concordia University, St. Paul baseball team was selected in 2011-12.

Bertrand, who is a junior from Baldwinsville, New York, has led Merrimack to back-to-back national championships. For the second straight season, Bertrand won the Elite 90 Award for the 2019 NCAA Division II men’s lacrosse championship. Bertrand holds a 3.92 GPA with his mechanical engineering major.

“I am honored to be named the Google Cloud Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year Award winner,” said Bertrand. “I owe a lot of what comes with it to my family, teammates, and coaches. Success comes when opportunity meets preparation and I was fortunate to have both in my time at Merrimack. As a student-athlete it is important to understand your priorities, stay focused on your goals and manage your time in a way that allows you to achieve those goals in both the classroom and on the field.”

On the field, Bertrand was named the USILA Player of the Year and Outstanding Attackman honor for the second consecutive season. He was also named the Northeast-10 Conference and the New England Player of the Year. Bertrand was also the only Division II player named to the Tewaaraton Watch List during the winter. The two-time Google Cloud Academic All-America® selection has been named an All-American three times, including two first-team honors, and named to the All-Northeast 10 first team honoree.

“Charlie has shown not only to be the best player in the country, but has shown how equally talented as well as hard working he is in the classroom,” said Merrimack head coach Mike Morgan. “He is a great representation of what we want the perception of Merrimack College lacrosse to be, on and off the field. We’re thrilled for him to earn this recognition.”

Statistically, Bertrand compiled 97 points this season (78 goals, 19 assists). He led the nation in points per game (6.06) and goals per game (4.88) and his 13 man-up goals was second nationally. He filled out his statistical ledger with 23 ground balls and seven caused turnovers.

University of the Cumberland’s Christina Klouda was named the CoSIDA NAIA Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year Monday (July 29) while Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Abby Bertics was selected as the Division III honoree Tuesday (July 30). The Google Cloud Division I Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year award winner will be announced Thursday (Aug. 1) followed by the College Division selection Friday (Aug. 2).
